My old AB used to love destroying hedgehogs, she'd crunch them up spikes and all!!!The noise was great lol I used to sit there picking spikes out her mouth all night. She got one at night once but I couldn't see what it was, so as I go over to see what she's shaking around some guts splatter in my face!! Lovely

  15. Okay--you must be outside of London if your dog is catching hedgehogs?? LOL

Here in the States you can get cans of spray saline to wash out wounds--it's the best stuff going, and you can get it any any chemist. Don't use peroxide as that's a little too harsh and can actually do further damage to the tissue, if there is no redness or heat, you can just use the saline, if it's looking as if it might start to get a little infected, use gentle iodine (less than 10% or if you can't find the gentle iodine just dilute the regular).

You want the punctures to heal from the inside out, so if you wash them out that will keep them open so they can heal and drain. One of the easiest things to use if you can't get the spray saline is a syringe without the needle, as that will let you direct the spray into the punctures.

The issue with any puncture wound, whether it is a bite or spines, is the bacteria on the outside of the skin is pushed inside, and that's basically an invitation for infection, so keeping the area open and clean will help a great deal.

I have a Great Dane whose hobby is killing skunks, raccoons, possums, and feral cats (I know this because she brings the corpses to me--ugh) and have had to clean out more puncture wounds than I care to think about--I keep the saline, iodine, and an antibiotic wash called Vetericyn, which is AMAZING stuff, but I'm afraid isn't available on your side of the pond, on top of the fridge for easy access since I have to use it so much. I also keep the baking soda, peroxide, and Dawn dishsoap up there for when she kills the skunks--phew!

hah, shite....................those poor dogs, my old pitbull had a go at a hedgehog when a pup, never done it again, learnt his lesson.
My sister's Amstaff can skin them alive , they make a hell of niose.

Me being tight bastard, I would try removing them myself if the dog sat still for a while, salt water, iodine..........lots of other things to use instead of getting hit with a vet bill.
