DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. —DeKalb police are pushing for new leads after they say someone killed a dog by hanging it from a bridge.

Channel 2’s Amy Napier Viteri talked with the woman who found that dog.

She was with her 2-year-old, who likes to stop at the bridge on Kelly Lake Road and look at the creek, but she says something made her stop him Tuesday morning as she looked and saw the dog hanging by a chain.

“I saw the dog's head hanging and I saw a metal chain around the dog's neck,” the woman said, asking not to be identified.

The woman said she is still frightened by what she saw. She told Viteri that she's seen the dog before in the neighborhood.

“Every time I've seen the dog, it was a good-natured dog, never barking at anybody, just a really good dog,” the woman said.

She never saw its owner but says the dog wore a collar. She doesn't think it was a stray.

“No animal deserves, in my opinion, deserves to be treated that way,” the woman said.

Police describe the dog as a female pit bull around 1 year old.

They believe someone intentionally put the dog over the bridge and say they found injuries to the paws.

“Consistent with when he was thrown over probably, trying to claw its way up this wall. So yeah, it suffered,” said Detective Jason Gagnon from the DeKalb County Police Department Animal Cruelty Unit.

“Who would do that to a dog? Who would do that? I thought it was such a cruel thing,” the woman said.

The woman says she's been troubled ever since making the discovery and wants the case resolved quickly.

“My concern is if you can do that to a living thing, you can pretty much do that to anybody,” the woman said.

Police want to hear from anyone who has information about this case.

You can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 404-577-8477 or call the animal cruelty unit directly at 404-294-2645.

I hope the person responsible is discovered and dealt with. This is a reminder that if you let your dog roam, bad things can happen.
