Deterring Aggressive Behavior Towards Animals

Discussion in 'Training & Behavior' started by willard814, Jun 17, 2011.

  1. I'm thinking about adopting a 6 month old Pitbull terrier and I was considering an e-collar in case he want to chase animals while walking thru the woods of PA. We have bears and mountain lions and other animals that I don't want my dog to chase, will an e-collar prevent that and in the case my dog got a hold of an animal will the e-collar shock be enough to get him to let go. I ask because Pitbull terriers are notorious for attacking and never letting go and I feel a shock send the dog into a frenzy.

I would consider keeping him on a lead until he is obedient enough to stop when he is commanded to stop. If you can't control your dog with a command to stop and return to you then he has no business being off lead anywhere other than in a confined area. IMO.

Very few real apbts are going to listen if they see another animal and the e-collar isn't going to help much either. These dogs are bred to ignore pain. You'd be better off keeping it on a lead and carrying a break stick. Be advised in pa its fully legal to shoot dogs chasing game...

  4. Who would shoot the dog? Game commission?

My Point Exactly... Keep it on a lead.

Game wardens, farmers, hunters, or anyone in the woods with a gun that witnesses said dog chasing game.

  7. I had a Doberman that I trained myself very well and he would come when called no matter what, but I was under the impression with all the bad press that Pitbulls Terriers get that they don't listen once they decide to go after something. Can I use the same training methods on a Pitbull Terrier (The Reward and Reinforcement system) that I use to train my Doberman? I'm assuming that I can given all the YouTube videos of Pitbull owners showing off how well trained their dogs are.

  8. Thanks for the heads up! That's certainly good to know, I'll have to tell my co-worker she has a Lab that loves to chase bears and such.

  9. What's a break stick?

A tool anyone owning a APBT should own and have easy access to. Its a tool used to open the mouth of a dog in hold. No real bulldog is going to out on command once they have hold of something live. I'm sure some have managed to accomplish that kind of training but I ain't ever seen one let go of an animal by a verbal command. Your voice alone will more times than not, hype the dog up more.

    .

It should be legal to shoot the owner for not having it on a leash. The dog is just doing what is natural to it. lol

Maybe you should go for the bird dog.

jmo but if your gunna beleive all the hype on the news n wat ya read in the paper then the pit bull might not be the dog for you, they are a determined dog n if it wants to get somthing 9 out of 10 times its gunna get it,you aint gunna call it back,i wouldnt take it of the leash unless you know its safe to.but ya just neva know, wat might come round the corner???in all honesty though a pitbull would not be good for you if your already weary it wont help the dogs reputation, and why do you want the dog if your wary of the breed ?????????????

learn what these dogs are capable of the press is there to sell stories, however some of the stories MAY be true. The best thing to do is meet folks that already own these dogs and hopefully they will be the type that respect/know the breed and aren't playing the odds.

there are some dogs that can be trained by voice command and off lead, but that is a whole different level of commitment to training(ie,search and rescue). don't know wheither you are a kid or just goofing trying to stir folks up. comb through these forums, there are 100's of good/great advice dig into early posts. you may/will get flushed if you lean towards being a turd. go through the whole forum first!!!

I wouldnt get one until after you have been around a few first. They are a really strong willed dog. If you are really listening to the media about them.... Its probably not a good idea to get one right now. Most of those stories are mixed up and not true. they leave out details... anyway.. if you believe the myths, dont get an APBT.
