As with any type of swim tank you need to make a contraption where you can tether the dog to hold him in place.

Right have to make it where he can't swim to edge and get out. Depending on what your using for him to swim in should be fairly simple. I've got a 32 foot 2x4 that will span across the pool and stay secure under deck railing with a two foot length of chain connected in middle

Swimming is great for your dog. Do you want a technique to force a scared dog to swim, or do you want to develop a confident, strong swimmer? A good start is to have the dog associate the pool with cooling off. Dog may go in on her own and stay in if her body temp is warm enough. If your dog is well bonded, he will want to be in the water with you. You can leash the dog and swim with him. If your dog has strong drive for a favorite ball/toy, leverage it in the pool. APBT may not be natural swimmers like other breeds, but they are sure athletic enough to be decent at it. Build confidence in small increments.

The way I was taught, was that EVERY time you put your charge through A full keep, then put him to work, it takes A little bit out of them. So the way I figure it why add heat to the equation? Now some exercise is great and A must for me as in late night/ early AM walking, the swim tank but other than that I'm just trying to add late night/early morning activity! Just the way I was taught in A VERY hot humid climate on the Gulf! JMO ;)

I live on the Gulf Coast to trot and agree with what you saying , but it just doesn't cool off that much in the evening and morning in the summer time. 90 percent humidity and it doesnt matter what the temp is ..Harvest time is best.

Cajun lives a little further north than I do but you may as well say he gets the same weather I do off the Gulf.

Gulf Coast covers a big area.Florida, Alabama , Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas..lol big area , so lots of doggers have dealt with this.

In the central part of North Carolina the nights are not too bad in the summer and the mornings are much better. Still hot as the temperature and humidity ramps up mid morning. The nights the humidity falls off a little but still in the 80's til later in the evening.

It is not the easiest thing to do working a dog in the heat. The object is to put the dog in his best possible situation to succeed and some see the heat as a detriment to the success of the dog. The flip side is some can hit the nail on the head and take advantage of the guy who thinks he can hit the nail on the head.

You could actually throw Mexico in there as well.

  16. Question, I take my dog for a 1 - 2 hour walk per day with about 15 min of flirt pole after and he would be just fine, ever since about two weeks ago when the weather started getting in mid 80s + he can barely make it to 1hr before he starts heavy panting and straight up sits down in the grass

Is it the change of weather that's making him gass out quicker or could there be worms or something in his system?

trick is catching this before he gets to that point.
Yea u can bet the heat will tell on you and as far as worms , he should be in great health before you push him..Meaning worm free.

It could be any number of things! First are you working him for A weight pull or Confimation show? If so the first thing I'd do is draw blood and carry A stool sample just to rule any thing internal out. You might want to break that HR. up it's hard for me to say without being there! But any I start PRE I ALWAYS have A health check up. Good luck let us know what you find out!

This is exactly my point.. Living in the extreme heat is one thing. Putting yourself in the best possible position to win is another. If you feel it's best to race all year round then do so. I'll maintain my athletes in the summer mths and race when it's cooler. Just as I would work in the early am and cooler evenings to make make sure I get 100% out of my motor every night and day which in turn hopefully I get 100% when it really counts.
One thing I've learned in life is to be patient and in this situation i won't let my pride stop me from any achievements.

Absolutely it's the heat that affecting your dog. Working in the heat will cause the heart rate to increase much faster which in turn heats up the body, which burns more fuel (energy) to cool it causing a rapid decline (blowing hot)
