cloning of the greats....is it possible?

i have a serious, but hypothetical, question to put to our esteemed members regarding cloning!
if i had access to the buried remains of a dog,( that had gone on to prove his worth as a producer after he was deceased ), would it be possible to exhume the remains and clone from viable d.n.a found within the remaining tissue......also if i had a tooth, dislodged whilst a dog was alive, and kept as a souvenir for some 20 years or so do you think that would hold viable d.n.a for cloning?
and does anyone know if the clone would produce viable fertile sperm?
i know we have some informed members, just strikes me that a dip into the past would be an opportunity not to be missed if at all possible.....
    with respect.

I would think you need live cells

thanks for the response, perhaps one might wrangle with the ethics of exhumation but the tooth has sat in a cupboard draw and would have no ethical restraints...
i see it as a similar procedure to freezing straws of semen ( an opportunity that did not occur during the dogs lifetime! )....regards.

the dna sample was taken on a live dog in that example. right?
Never heard of a cloning based on dead cells. but im no expert

thank you all for your comments, it appears that it would be super expensive......i know that efforts are being made to try and recreate some lost animals through cloning and gene technology as in the dodo and woolly mammoth, i think i may wait awhile until the rates come down..l.o.l.......but what a thought?

I'm no geneticist, but in the event one of "The Greats" were to be cloned, do they still retain the ability to produce healthy offspring? Would rom and por records be put into question being that it is essentially the same dog? I for one don't believe this would go over well with a lot of doggers.

    So what...
There ain't no rules to the shit lol. Like I say, there isn't no dogman committee voting on what's acceptable and what's not. There is not even an authority in the dogs to give titles such as rom and por. Those are things of the past here. And at the end of the day when it was legal and a different world. What do you think holds more weight... A title given to your clone or all your bad ass offspring. Would those offspring even be papered the correct way? Probably not lol

the original point raised was hypothetical, i do not think i would ever be able to afford such a venture....but if i did!....the offspring would be papered true, the pups would never be offered to the world and if campaigned and shown to be as good as their father then i am sure the dog world would beat a path to my yard ( or try to! )...but i have enjoyed sharing my thoughts with ya'll...
    i appreciate all replies....with respect.

I think once you start dabbling into cloning then comes genetic engineering and it gets all fucked up. I mean the ultimate will have been reached, yeah. But reasons for breeding dogs would be gone cuz u can just create the baddest sob by selecting traits. Obviously we aren't close to this but when ppl start cloning dogs engineering will be next and old fashion eugenics will be of the past lol

since starting the thread i have obviously given further thought and i think that i would be very lucky to recreate that special quality that the original had...deep gameness and ability to throw deep gameness in his offspring ( given that 1/2 of the genetic input is from the bitch )...but i enjoyed mulling it over in my mind for a few days....regards to all.

Rumour has it that T.G. allready stores tissue of his studs, to be used when popular science is ready for it...

  16. It will all go back the age old nature vs nurture debate, even if the dog looked exactly like original dog so much more goes into a great dog than just genetics. In another mans hands that dog could have been worm food if not properly brought along to develop it's full potential.Which in turn would usually mean the dog would have never got the chance to reproduce rule of thumb.

The 2nd half of the equation would be the other dog being bred or course.I think for the most part that's where many breeding programs will fall short, believing or thinking they know it's only the Dog or the Bitch that has the final say in how said litters turn out.but in reality one is just as important as the other.

That being said i believe no more advanced as we are on cloning it would be a fruitless thing to do and we've not even touched on the ethical aspects on cloning which of course we all know they will be debates about it.

i think the real strength of the cloned dog would come about when he is put back into the bloodline that has developed since his initial demise...going back to the well!
