There's Dryfus! Any of you guys in the area should join the NNY Bulldoggers. They are working hard to battle BSL in the area and have the backing of the ADOA who are also a great group to join if you want to kick some BSL but!
Here's the link to the ADOA http://www.adoa.org/
I know the NNY Bulldoggers has a yahoo group. I'll have to hunt down the link.....

Thanks, Zoe -- I'm only an hour away from Watertown, NY, so I'll definitely look into the Bulldoggers' group.

sent them a nice email concerning the ban on adoption. why not do background checks for adopties? they do it for kids and guns why not pets? domestic violence should be a disqualifier.. bsl and dog adoption bans are a short term fix to a long term problem.

Ya.... he started the group I believe.

I said the exact same thing. That is the norm for most reputable rescues. Home visits, reference checks, contracts, the whole nine yards. It's like the shelters are living in the dark ages as far as that goes. I'm on a rescue board and it is so frustrating to hear the stories of the people who work in shelters that have policies that prevent them from denying a person a dog. Even if things seem wrong they still have to give them the dog. Their hands are tied. They either have to follow the policies or loose their jobs. Not only that, many shelters don't spay and neuter. They just sell the animals for 50 bucks and the whole cycle starts again. It's time for the city shelters and pounds to come out of the dark ages.

I agree with you, they should do background checks. There's so many people that will adopt APBT, and other large bread dogs, to guard their junk yards, crack houses, etc. Then you have your inner city kids around here that have back alley dog fights. They'll pay the adoption fee, or steal a dog, either way, they'll make a little profit. That's all they care about.

My first reaction was the same.

Before coming out with that proposal I spoke with the man that runs our local county dog shelter. I want to work with him so I keep him in the loop as far as what I'm thinking. We are on the same team and I don't want to step on his toes.

I asked him and belive it or not he said it wouldn't help him. This is why. This shelter is always ranked in the top 3 of all NYS shelters. They are awesome. Even though they aren't supposed to screen they are extremely careful.

They are pit bull friendly and were very insulted by the Mayors suggestion that they would adopt out a dangerous dog.

They work with all kinds of breed rescues. They said I could right a pamphelt on responsible Pit Bull ownership and possibly give a class to prospective owners.

Anyway, the shleter is an ally of ours up here and I don't want to get in there way. LOL 2 ACO are joining the club. One has been into APBT's for 20+ years and the other has American Bulldogs.

Thanks for the info. I think that's great that you have the opportunity to create a pamphlet and also give a class. Please keep us posted!

    Just an update.

I spoke at the city council meeting last night. It went well and we got a couple of councilmen on our side. The Mayor was overwhelmed by letters and e-mail against his proposal and comments. He toned down his beliefs quite a bit but still wouldn't change what he was saying.

The county totally ignored him. They didn't even respond.

We got another sound bite out of it on the news and it is now a dead issue.

Thanks for the support and thanks to all who wrote the Mayor!
