Chewing Household Items

    Hello,
My pup BigBoi is generally pretty good about not chewing on anything but his toys. However about every 2 weeks he'll spot something he knows isn't a chew toy like a "highliter" (1 month ago) and some of my computer software (just this past week). I feel like both were punishment for me not walking him on a couple days when the weather was really bad and I didn't feel like getting snowed on or rained on. Could that be the reason? Or is it just because he found them on the floor? For the most part I think he understands the floor is his territory. He is only 7 months, and that could be playing a part in this as well. Maybe he's not old enough to be out of the kennel just yet?

Please help if you know how to cut out this behavior!!

IMO I have had similar experiences when my dog was just not worked enough, it was also more frequent when she was younger under the same circumstances. Just probably bored and looking for something new and stimulating. If the weather is too bad, try indoor activities, perhaps you have enough room for a game of tug, break out a kong toy or some other game that would work him mentally.

    Hey,
Thanks for the quick response. I do play with him a lot. We love running around our whole living room. He has a minor problem with nipping at me though when we do that. I feel like I'm slowly knocking that one out thought. You're probably right, he just needs some new toys. We will be getting another puppy though soon. Hopefully once they can both be out of the kennel together they can run around and release a lot of extra energy together. And not terrorize my place while they're at it.

But what can I do to work him mentally? He is very smart. He catches on very quick. Taught him how to crawl in 10 min. Only 2 repetitions with my hands on his back. After that he got it on his own. Not much keeps him interested for long because he catches on so fast.

Do you have a yard? Although you might be tired from running around your living room, I highly doubt that space is big enough for exercise for your pup. The items being on the floor is more so the reason he chewed them, pups are just like babies, if its in ther reach, they will grab it. I wish you the best and hope you can please the one pup you have before you get another.

My dog doesn't chew anything but when he want attention he will grab something he is not allowed and stand in front of us teasing us with it to which we have to have a wee game of catch me if you can (annoying). He mainly picks on the kids my sons shoes and my daughters soft toys. He is bored and wants to play. If I dont have time take him out I might give him a bone to chew on for a while. We did all the tricks on the net. Loves tug games, bringing in the wood for the fire, big hard plastic ball, he would love a spring pole but we dont have anywhere safe to put it, in the end he usually gets to tow me along the bike track or I drive him to the park (good thing about rainy days is no one else is there) I just open the car door and let him go for it. The big problem was the more I did the more he expected. As he has got older he has calmed down a bit but now has a pull on my sleeve for what ever he wants (disrespect or just him trying to communicate?) either way he gets put outside. A puppy would be great but in my case not very fair on the pup. My dog loves find it games play with a toy for a bit get them to sit and wait and hide it. If not toys people are better ( hide and seek with the kids) be warned on being found you might get jumped on.

getting another pup can just end up biting you in the ass.might just make him jealous + who's to say he will even get along with him??
this breed has a tendency to not play well with others.at best you may find yourself with 2 dogs that are bored and looking to you for something to do.at worst you can have 2 dogs that cant stand the sight of one another..
i have 2 dogs a male and female and fortunately for me they get along {for the most part}.but aside form occasionally throwing them a rope and having them play tug, they really don't entertain each other as much as you would think.its more like constant competition! it IS twice the work, twice the shit to pick up,twice the food, twice the time and twice the money.

It shouldn't be a problem with the 2 of them getting along. He's been well socialized so far and he is still only 7 months. They'll both be pups together for some time. Plus the other pup will not be my responsibility, but my roomies instead. And hopefully since ill be switching him over to better quality food he won't shit so much.

We have a very LARGE yard that he has free reign of right now. It's not fenced but I make sure to watch him and let him run pretty freely. As long as I'm watching he stays close to the house. I get out and throw the ball with him too.

Don't make me sound like a bad owner. This dog is very well taken care of. It just bugs me when he acts out. He's been so good i'm not used to him doing bad things. Like I said it doesn't happen often that he pulls this shit. He is a VERY HAPPY puppy. Walked regularly and has a large yard and a lot of love. I live in a college town with college students and everyone loves the dog. He gets loved on by everyone.

Wow! BigBoi you better heed the advice and knowledge on this and other sites. You are setting yourself up for failure. The other members responses to your mistakes should give you a clue how far off base you are and make for an entertaining day here at the office.

  13. No one said you are a bad owner you need to take a step back and chill the fuck out.

What people ARE saying is that this is a working breed and what would be enough exercise for another breed is not acceptable for these dogs. Playing fetch, running around your living room, and taking some walks are simply not enough. You also need to stop acting like a little girl about "not wanting to be wet or cold". I had to move for work recently, the place I moved too is much colder and snowier than I am used to - sometimes it is -25 degrees F outside - but I still have to leash up the hound, bundle up, and deal with it. Unless there is a tornado or hurricane outside there is no excuse.

Id give it a twack over the head with whatever it was chewing. But alot of people don't agree with my methods, but i have good obeying happy dogs

  15. Well do any one have any advice on teaching your pup not to chew on your furniture!
Cause I have a 9 week ol# pup that chew on my table legs even though she has chew toys , chew bones , and a whole lot more chew things .

  16. Even though I let her socialize with other dogs and people to kind of keep her aggression down

This and sleeve tugging... when he's inside keep him on a long line... if you use corrections then keep a prong/correction collar on the long line... if you don't use corrections then at least you can grab him real easy.

IMO seven months is WAY too young in most cases for a pup to have free run of anything. lol I generally restrict the freedom of pups that young so they aren't learning bad habits by default and I'm having to unteach unwanted behaviours. Some of the methods I use to do this are, crating the dog when I can't DIRECTLY attend to it. Using a leash like an umbilical cord around my waist so the dog is right in reach and I can direct their behaviour. I also put in ''in house'' tie downs so if I don't want the dog crated or attatched to me, it is still confined but with freedom. Make sure to keep an eye still and give the dog a toy or something so it doesn't chew your wall! lol Another thing I do is baby gate the pup in whatever room I'm in so I can keep a close eye on it to redirect unwanted behaviors.

I use heavy duty eye hooks in the stud in the wall and attach a leash to it for in house tie downs....

Don't take your eyes off the pup when it's out of the crate for starters. When it's chewing on something it shouldn't, remove it with a simple ''NO.'' and redirect it to something it SHOULD chew and PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE!
