I guess I'm just old and dumb ... Sounds like someone is trying to say that if you have two litter brothers : one is a rough cur that quits in 30 min. and the other is dead game (since you can't breed to a dead dog) you could breed to the cur brother w/ the same expectations of gameness in the litter as what you would have had if you had been able to breed to the dead game one ? So you would say that breeding for gameness is as easy as breeding for ability, athleticism, hard mouth ... ?
Breeding for any of these is difficult enough, but gameness seems the most elusive. Mother Nature being the b!tch she is, getting those genes to line up and the breeding to click you need to have as many things on your side as possible --- your breeding stock having as many of the traits as you can get in both sire and dam gets you that much closer to a good litter of pups and even then there is no guarantee !!!

not al but there are people that come to a point its not difficult .
it has to do with understanding

maverick and Texas ful bro's both went there own way
and did both good in producing lol
    there are more example's

but now the brother's that one quit and other deadgame .
then we have to look better to the family they come from%

now you really believe in those genes and you want to try to get them back .
you have time/space/patience/money you can give that cur a try ..just for your self

personal if it quits in front of my ey's its over no matter what
    because i knew i have more lol:cool:

    GREAT THREAD AND TOPIC.
I always ask old breeders if they seen dogs pop up the same or similar to one back in its pedigree. The answer is always yes, they come back. Some same look and style, while some look nothing like a particular dog but share identical styles. So picking the pup that looks like SO & SO isnt always promissed.
The more they line breed one particular dog dosnt seem to bring that dog back any faster. So i try to stack the pedigree with as many desirables as possible and elimenate the bad pushing them back in the ped.But the bad will always pop up also,Doesnt mean if you have generations of greats that bad is eliminated. Two curs can produce an ace and two aces rarely produces.
Alot of breeders, mostly peddlers depend on on great dog to sell generations of dogs and often fall short of reproducing the same.THE HOME OF CH SO & SO till the wheeels fall off.
Other breeders base thier stock on what works and have no particular SO & SO that thier chasing, just a solid family that continues to produce thru selectivity and hopes of getting that breeding that "nicks".These breeders arent kennel blind and dont breed themselves in the wrong corner chasing that dead dog.Usually that dead dog was bred to undesirible bitches to put pups on the ground and when it comes to SO & SO , HELL you could breed him to a fence post and get a bulldog.I rather breed em to a light post,lol...
TDK would be an excellent example of not chasing a dead dog,but perhaps rather a family.Truely rare anymore...

The way I look at it is you can't have a throwback unless u have seen the throwback ! If you have a dog that reminds us of a dog so much from the past it,means we had first hand knowledge or hands on experience with the throw back! I think it takes a long time breeding the same family before u can make that call. Jmo

All the men i asked this question usally bred at least five generations to come to this conclusion. This is no speculation just facts I found.Maybe some one that has selectivly bred at least five generations can chime in...

California chrome is a throwback to the greatest triple crown winners and producers and just completed the second leg of the triple crown successfully, the first two generations are below average and dont get interesting till the third and beyond, his breeding cost next to nothing and now hes worth millions, who does he resemble and who is he a throwback to?

Tesio the greatest thoroughbred race horse breeder of all time proved you could take the average from great and make them the greatest by drawing from deep into the ancestry. Many of the traits for successful performance are polygenic, and do not follow Mendels law.

Great post...Alot of race horse breeders have similar thoughts and styles of breeding as game dogs as wll as greyhounds.Plant breeders also use similar breeding princepals of selective "drawing" into the genepool. They will hundreds if not thousands of seeds to get that speacil phenotype.

Im with ya! We are living in a different world today compared to the 80s, 70s,or even futher back in time ect. Back then Dog-men could travel and match there bulldogs matching best on best, with very little concern of law enforcement. IMO, We might not feel as much need to chase dead dogs if we could legally match them, Read and keep up with match reports ect. Also IMO those guys stuck together for best on best breeding as well. If i have a true great game bitch when retired, I would breed her to achieve the best bulldogs that i could put together with other Great dog-men's Retired Best ect....Im learning 1day at a time. I have chased dead dogs. I want to help create great dogs today.
