Maybe I should do what C-Note said and look into some confirmation show champs ? Steel Hearts GR CH Matthew is a beautiful dog........ would I need to be less concerned with prey drive with something similar to that ?

I have a 3.5 month old grandson off of Matthew, crossed with tight Boogieman blood on top. I can't comment on the prey drive because he's so young, but reading through this thread it sounds like that would be a fine dog for you and your family.

Intelligent, athletic, and very high energy.

I'm not saying the other dog will not work for you, I honestly don't know, but it seems like everything you are looking for would revolve more around the confirmation/weight pull type dogs.

That's what most of us are imagining when we say that it's not the best idea for a family pet, or a similar unforeseen situation that could always occur in a split second. And if I was in the same exact situation, I'd follow my own advice and get a dog with similar characteristics but without the performance accomplishments. The only reason I'd be seeking out animals with those accomplishments is if I'm interested in doing the same with the pup. I do wish you the best of luck and was glad Rob was able to give his first hand experience with that Matthew dog, I think you and your daughter would appreciate the kind of life you'd be able to enjoy with a dog bred like that over a accomplished performance animal. Best of luck in you all's decision. I believe with this much planning going into your decision, you'll make the right one.

Trees / Rage I appreciate both of your insight. Maybe that is an alternative that I should take a look at. God bless. You guys have a good weekend .

Not trying to knock you or anything but 60hrs a week is a lot of time away from dog unless you work from home. A big yard is a good thing but can also be a bad thing, lots of space to escape under or over fence. One thing I always worry about is someone leaving a door open or slightly cracked and dog getting out. I highly recommend not letting your kids friends play with dog unless you are right on top of them. It's not about the dog attacking but more like a nip at a hand or jumping up on them. These dogs go bonkers some times and will run full speed for no reason and could level a little kid.

Seems like you are doing well for your self at an early age so you have plenty of time to get a dog. If I was in your shoes I would be most worried about housing/containment of dog. The proper time to raise a pup that will need tons of supervision by you. Your biggest fear should be this dog getting out loose in the neighbor hood. I hope you don't think you can just open your back door to let the dog out to go potty and return to let him/her back in. Away at work..... Anyone leave a door cracked open door and dog is waiting by door and slips out. That dog is gone and I mean it's off to the races.

I wish you the best of luck with what ever you choose but with the amount of hours you are working it will really put a strain on things with a dog that requires almost 24/7 watching. Look into a chain spot or kennel to alleviate any potential problems that may occur when you are not present.
