I guess my question would be what are you trying to accomplish? Daily exercise when weather doesn't permit hand walking? Putting the dog in shape for conformation show? Part of training regime for weight pull?
My suggestion would be to try to get both a carpet mill, slat mill and a good all around exercise program of hand walking, spring pole, pulling heavy chains/weights, flirt pole, and 2 kinds of mill work plus some swimming other varied exercises to keep your dog from getting stale/tired of the same training.Start the training with the dog emptying out and at the end of every training period give the dog a good cool off walk and a run down!

If u are really getting in to these dogs get all 3 if u can get them for the right price. Thay all have different purposes and cant be judged on the same level

I agree, IMO Slat's are used to improve Stamina/wind. Carpets build Endurance/strength, pretty sure e mills can accomplish both if used correctly. But it's best used to warm up or walk out in bad seasons/weather.

Never been a fan of the emill..always thought they were about as useless as a "conditioning tool" as one could possibly have

The e-mill is a tool just like a slat mill or a carpet mill or a shovel or a hammer. They all have their purpose and when used correctly they are very effective. When any of them are used incorrectly they are not very useful. In fact when used incorrectly not only will they leave the dog in a lessened state of conditioning but they will also be detrimental to the health of the dog.

There are not a lot of carpet mills being used anymore. Most everyone uses end rollers with some sort of bearing or spinning capability. The surfaces are of some sort of polymer/plastic, and the carpets are more along the lines of a belt. Most 'carpet' mills today turn with the ease of a lot of advertised slat mills.

So the 'carpet mills' of today are the 'tool' of choice for me. They must be driven step by step at lower speeds and that is somewhat similar to the carpet mills of old. Yet, they will allow a dog to open up with the same range of motion in an all out sprint. The dog can stretch out as if he were on the ground or on a really free slat mill.

Everyone has their place. I have a carpet mill from back in the day that has stationary PVC pipes on the end, a sanded sheet of ply wood as a surface and a 70's era 'shag' carpet. Every step must be a 'driving step'. I like what it does for the dogs.

I also have a 'carpet/belt' mill that allows the dog to open up and go all out for periods of time without the dog trying to keep up with a belt running out from under him.

I also use a slat mill that allows the dogs some longer steady state runs.

Each has their purpose. I can dig a hole with a hammer but it would be a more effective process to use the shovel. S

Slim, I appreciate what you're saying n I agree that each has their purpose. I personally like both a good carpet mill along with a slat mill, but for me the only place for an emill is the dumpster.

I'm not the biggest fan either but there use to be a guy around here that brought some dogs out that were 'ready for an all nighter' every time he came out. He walked the dog from the chain to dump to the e-mill and back. He figured out some things. So although I do not use one it can be an effective tool when a person knows how to make it work. S

I use the e mill for when the weather is to bad to do my walks. It helps to stay on track. I also have a slat mill and a old carpet mill.
