All done! Ended up using a zipper to attach the belt together so well see how long it lasts. It gets 2 turns with one push but I need to adjust the front roller some more. Here's a quick clip of Sophies first time on it.

Don't mind the retractable leash and harness just wanted to try it out real quick.

    Looks good.

In a couple of days you will find this out on your own. The back end is a little tall for that dog. When that dog runs it in an excited fashion he will beat his tail against the side walls. In a blink of an eye it will look like a blood bath on the boards.

Other than that great job. I told you it was a lot more simple than it is made out to be.

Did well for a first time, Cut the side's at an angle from about 2-3 inches from the bottom at the back to similar from behind the upright. Should leave her enough room to prevent happy tail splatters.

  6. Do you a part number for that plastic sheet?

Summit racing sells it as well. A little cheaper there too. I do not have a part number.

  8. Hey I want to try this method on a mill I want to restore that is extremly stiff I purchased in bad shape . I want more of a free running mill. How do you connect The runner carpet? With conveyor belt zipper? Where can I get that ? Also should I still use the 10ft plastic sheet from summit?

There are more expensive running surfaces but this plastic has never let me down. It lasts forever.

The carpet ends are overlapped by 1.5" and glued with 3M contact cement. Spread it on both sides, let it get tacky and put it together. I use two pieces of wood and brad nail them together and let it sit for a few hours, usually over night.

  10. Okay so the carpet and the plastic are the way to go for a free spin...

I think so. Go to that video. There is one in that group of one of my red females. It shows how smooth the mill turns.

With carpet the more free you get the more bunched the carpet can get. One foot will bunch it and make a hump as the next foot hits it or drags across the top. It starts off free but the stumbles and mis steps defeat the purpose.

The carpet needs to be as smooth and flat as possible in order to maintain a steady sprint/run. The thickness of the carpet is reduced to free it up until it becomes a problem. That is how I experimented until I found the runner carpet from Lowe's.

Then.....gas prices went up and all petroleum based products followed suit. The backing on the carpet was thinned and cheapened to cut cost. I quit making mills for awhile as the new runner carpet did not suit me as it was not holding up. Now I buy the runner carpet but double layer it. It starts out stiff but when the mill is broken in it is as free as I like but still makes the dog work.
