Bullys in shelters

Discussion in 'Rescue & Adoption' started by QueenOf2Titans, Oct 1, 2009.

  1. I cannot believe how uninformed people that work at county shelters and some of the SPCAs are!!

Last time I checked, a SharPei isn't a full blooded apbt! ...Right

Any time I go to the shelters I can't believe how many dogs they name pits or pit mixes

oh not to mention the people on craigslist who list pit-chow mixes or whatever...get your dogs fixed or separate them!!

The last time I went I asked them why every short hair, bulky dog was called a pit bull their answer was that it's liable for them to name the dog a pit bull.
That is, sadly, because if someone were to adopt a "pit bull" dog from the shelter that was labeled mixed breed and it attacked they could turn around and sew. Under the circumstances that the shelter sold them a "dangerous" breed without "concent" (so that is what they said)

I try not to visit the shelters, besides that it is a depressing site I cant stand the people who go there that want a pit bull because of all the wrong reasons.

My shelter takes a different approach, ALL of the bulldogs are labeled Staffordshire Bull Terrier... They will call them anything but a pit at one of the shelters... There is a chocolate bulldog pup at my AC labeled Chocolate LabX.

I do hate going to shelters, but I do it to take a few dogs out and do a small TT on them and then list them up on my sites with what I know. It's depressing for sure, but the dogs need us.

And don't get me started on CL, UGH, I see SO many 'accident' litters, some not even mutts, on there for free or 'rehoming' fee. 90% are bulldogs.

  4. poisoned- you are awesome...I go to the shelters for reference, I'm glad to hear you pick them up when you can, I wish there were more people like you that did that....purebred or not, any dog with an ounce of bully in him is in for a tough life!

The number of Pit/Pit mixes dying in shelters is staggering. The number of well bred Pits dying in shelters is embarrassing! We are seeing a surge of the APBT in our shelters. Not the big hulking dog that non-pit people think is the APBT by the true dog. I can not believe the number that are labeled Pit Mixes because employees can not identify the true Pit. One sweet little female was labeled a mix and when I asked about her, I was told that she couldn't be a pure bred Pit because she only weighed 45 pounds. Most shelters never let folks know when a Pit comes thru their doors and very few leave the way they came in. My heart breaks over every one i have to say no to.

It seems that about half of the pits I see come into our local shelter are good dogs and the others are either damaged or their temperment is off. I can honestly say that I've only seen ONE bully come in though. Most are authentic sized dogs, one that was even smaller than my 40lb dogs.
