I knew the fake breeding part is coming. Rufus hohoho :D
That's the trouble with studying peds ... you never know what it's good for ~X(
And that's why I don't have Red Boy dogs. Just too many open questions. I wonder that you didn't mention the Hound story >:)
Well, it's much easier to me to say Bo is a Lightner dog ... but RB sucks.

I'm glad that this should be no prob at all with my dogs. At least I feel extremely safe about this fact :P

Of course, the Holland dogs were good to cross, if still game and bred like the papers show. Hybrid vigor of a cross is the answer.
Them VJ dogs ... well, if I have to choose my favorite Eli-strain (?) then it would be this stuff. Lots of over 2h w and l's ... and then Freebee ... nice.
I believe those crosses have been made ? Not saying Holland did this, but ...

Correct peds on dogs is a great tool. Our dogs we have today are made of them of yesterday. And it still says something for sure.
And sometimes, just sometimes, it says 'that's ok'. But it mostly says 'hell no' :D
Of course, it won't help much without looking at the dogs first hand.
But the point probably is ... just do not follow the hype ... look out for the honest dogmen and breeder of good game dogs.
I wish all of you to get the dogs you like.

No matter what you have been through over the day, when the work is done and you sit down and look over the yard with all those wonderful dogs on chains ... and you get 'that feeling' ... then it's ok, I guess B-)

God bless them honest breeder with true peds on their dogs :D:-B

Not sure about the Hound story? Maybe one more detail.....

Agree with the last part about looking over the yard and if you are happy, then all is well.

The H guy I talked about that showed me the dogs as a kid told me this when I was in my late teens just before the service. If you stay in these dogs for 2 years, 20 years or 200 years, when you are done, and you are happy with your time in the dogs, and no one knows your name, the mission has been accomplished.

Digging deeper pretty much means he was not a fan of selling puppies, placing ads, inviting people to the yard, talking the game, doing other things that would get you in the cross hairs.

Is this old ? Or is it new, because we are talking here a bit ?
Matt had no desire to share hundreds of stories like that ... let's change his mind :D
What about a new book ?
It's always a pleasure to read some good stuff about the good old days ... as it clearly shows it's not ONLY IN MY HEAD \m/

"Then I understood why those guys had such great dogs, they were absolute cranks for gameness" =D>\m/ :P

"This is why I think my Panther strain of the Zebo line is gamer than other Zebo lines" ;)

I believe most people just can not see the influence coming from them Clouse dogs.
"Crenshaw made a Clouse x Rascal cross, Don Brodt made a Clouse x Rascal, Otter used a Clouse x Rascal cross so this cross does have some history of success."
Remember them Bolio/Tombstone/Clouse bred dogs ? ALL of the Patricks dogs have Clouse in them.
I have never heard much about them Stidham dogs, that's a pretty good sign lol, but the Hemphill/Clouse dogs are well known.

    Thanks Matt. Nice read.

That is a great read by Matt. This past spring/summer I visited with Matt for a couple of hours and traded some stories. I agree he is one of the last links to the days when the things we debate actually happened, being there being the key.

The story he told was told to me by another guy who should write a book as well. He was at the restaurant the evening the exchange between Mr. Teal and Mr. Crebbs took place with that certain Red Dog as Matt put it.

The story has been told a number of times by a number of people who were in and around those yards back then, and the ones that were hands on go with the version Matt mentioned.

Agreed also that when that Red Dog was crossed back to the Jocko blood things simply changed. Other families had to find some finish because the Jocko-Red Boy dogs (as they were called initially) were simply too dumb to stop. When one popped up with a touch of brains and a an ounce of ability (Yellow) it was something to behold.

Also agree of the Zebo family as a whole the Matt's strain of Panther had a much higher percentage of game dogs. He had such mouth (like Molly Bee...hint...hint...hint....and Rufus ....hint....hint...hint....) who knows. It was said to completely game check Panther you would have to had to give up three or four dogs in order to do so. Not really worth it.

The next time I am with Matt I will suggest the book, again.

I got this from Matt too that weekend...the dog game is like the Game of Thrones, with the best efforts to hide the family history it always seems to pop up, there is always someone who 'knows' and everyone is doing any and everything to sit on the Iron Throne, even if it is a brief sit.

Looking back over the years I can see where that applies.

Interesting read. Never heard of the Stidham dogs before. Must take another look back, have a RB/J dog and it’s a segment of the ped I never really looked at.

There is a ton of history but not a lot of people that can speak to it first hand.

Those dogs seldom left and seldom made a lot of fanfare on the biggest stages, at least not under their birth names.

Mr. Crebbs sold dogs to a number of 'known' dog men and the credit never made it to the source. The 'unknown' dog sold a ton of dogs registered under the name of the 'known' dog men.

The Stidham/Cable type dogs are more than likely behind a lot more dogs than what we see in the pedigrees of today.

There is an older fellow in SC that was hands on with these dogs in the early 60's on. He is in the church now and most frown upon these endeavors. His knowledge and history is so much so I would pay him to write it down or participate on a board like this. He tried it on Peds and it was a clusterf*&^ from the jump. He moderated and corrected a lot of pedigrees on the Pit Bull Bible forum. That worked a lot better as it was closely moderated and although Jack was an ass, the threads were kept well in check. I have often asked him to log on here and drop some knowledge on what he calls yesteryear. I will try again.

He can read a pedigree better than anyone I have ever known, he uses a 14 generation program, couple with his history I can listen to his recounts for hours on end.

Think I already said it here before somewhere, but when I talked on the phone to Lonzo Pratt, he asked whether I'd ever heard of a dog called Tarheel Matt's Panther? I said I'd heard of him and Lonzo told me the dog was unbelievable, then told me 'how' he was unbelievable, complete destroyer! Lonzo must really have seen something in Panther because he couldn't stop talking about him!
