Can anyone recommend some good books on APBTs?

Any of Colby's books are great but they are usually expensive, I have 2 of Stratton's books and while I've heard mixed reviews on the man himself the books are a good read and have some awesome pictures in them (especially The world of the american pitbull terrier) My next purchase is going to be Ed Faron's Complete gameDog.. once I can afford it. I'm sure there are many many more.. but those are what jump out at me.

    (found mine on ebay)

  3. I agree with NCPG for starters, but did you download The Sporting Bull Terrier" recently? It is outdated, but a good read. Good historical info on how things were down around 1912! If you didn't download there is a link on this forum. I could aslo print it out and bring it down to the VSBA on Nov. 3rd. Let me know.

i would say for the beginner go with diane jessup. if you know somethings, but not a whole lot, go with stratton.

  8. You're probably going to start a "big discussion" (many members believe her stances to be hypocritical [search her name in the forum]) about Diane Jessup, but I think that her literature has its purposes. Call me biased, but i loved Colb'y Book of the American Pitbull Terrier. She had a large part in that. Her The Dog that Spoke with gods was fiction, but a good story none the less. I am less into fiction, but I guess that's a personal issue. The Working Pitbull is ok, and I think that the last two are more applicable in the BSL fight than the stratton books. I say this because the stratton books are written toward "insiders" while Jessup's books appeal to a broader audience. Just my take.

lol, yeah i'm aware of the controversy surrounding her, but for a beginner i still think it is the best place to look. JMO. and i agree about the fiction thing, it's not my cup. but i think people of reasonable intelligence will sooner or later find what applies to them the best. it just takes a little while. we all started somewhere. it's just important that whatever you decide to read, you come to a full understanding of the breed. good luck! :)

There are many other good reads out there.

James Crenshaw's My Life and Times with the American Pitbull Terrier
Gary Hammonds's A Half Century with the American Pitbull Terrier
    Frank Rocca's Fighting for Life
T.L. Williams American Patriot and also Braveheart Portraits of American Legends
Bob Stevens Dogs of Velvet and Steel
Jack Kelly's 30 Years of Journal Cover Dogs
Tom Ratliff's Register Of Merit Legends
Tim Murphy's The Journal, A book of Pedigrees

    And my favorite
L.B Hanna's Memories of the Pit Bull Terrier and his Master written in 1926. It is a great history read about the dogs that came from England and Ireland to the United States around the turn of the century and early 1900s.

There are many other good reads out there. These are just some I have in my library about our great breed. There are a couple books out from the Colbys. Richard Stratton has I think 3 or 4 books. There are also a few books out for people that like to study pedigrees of many famous dogs through out history. There are also a couple photo books out there.
