Is Lactate training you talk about for humans or dogs or same for both is it the same as interval or fartlek training. I like to do interval training with the dogs hard sprint followed by a recovery phase, followed by a hard sprint etc, etc, a dog which will chase ball or stick is perfect for this, or cycling on a bike if you can get enough speed going to stress the dog.

Matty is this the method you guys have used with yours? (especially Tug).
Tugs condition is amazing IMO, would love to get mine even half as good as him. :)

  3. Swimming is great but only for a bit at first and in warm weather. The only thing I don't like about it is the dog gets very wet so I would not use it to condition one but no problem in a pre-keep.

    As for me......

Alright Matty, no it`s not the same. The interval training that you do is good though as the you are working the anaerobic system (as long as the work periods are not too long) and the dog is recovering aerobically so although the aerobic system is improving it is not being targeted which would make the dog slower and weaker. With intervals the work to rest ratio should be between 1:1 and 1:6.

Fartlek is a really good idea and is much better than contiuous submaximal work. Saying that it is probably impossible to improve all energy systems at the same time. If that was the goal though then really a lactate test would need to be done on treadmill where you would take tiny blood samples from which you could work out which speed the dog struggled at the most.

Lactate training comes from East Germanyand is done with resistance work and involves the dog maxing out with a set lasting 60 secs, 4 exercises would be good as an example with little rest in between but with a longer rest after the 4th before the circuit is done again. If done correctly with the right exercises with dog will feel nauseous within 18 mins but shouldn`t actually be sick.

So how can this programme be incorporated into a keep for a dog not a human, can you talk me through a typical keep then, because surly not all training methods used for humans are plausible to use on dogs.

Everything you already do was written for humans you know that. The energy systems are the same, the muscle fibres are the same, the hormonal response to exercise is the same. The Lactate training should only be done for 4 weeks or it will have a negative affect as it will take too much out of your dog.

I really rate chasing ball and doing hard wind sprints with recovery time. Tug went to my brother in amazing condition, he loves his ball and springpole and even if left he would keep himself in half decent nick, he is a very busy dog. With my dogs i do a lot of cycling especially with Riff has he cannot be let off the lead and imo is a lazy dog so is very hard to get him truly fit, where as brandi loves her work, loves the ball and can be let lose to hunt and chase.

yas you said your writing a book on conditioning. Any chance of seeing a dog youve conditiond?

Thanks for that Matty, sounds like a lot of variety and obviously the right genetics on some dogs. I have to say I admire your dogs as they all look excellent, so any advice from yourself is appreciated, thanks for taking the time. :)

About lactate acid weight loss training for humans, I believe that Charles Poliquin wrote a book but I do not know the success results of the proposed method. I only know that it is bloody painfull. About similarities between human and canine systems, I would be interested to see some data about muscle fiber similarities, meaning slow and fast twich percentages etc. I can accept that muscle systems respond in similar ways but I would also like to see the quality of each mamals muscles.

if you want to learn about brain surgery you do not ask cletus pumping gas at the local filling station.
try and learn from somebody that has been there and done it against the best competition, a james crenshaw, harry hargroves, fat bill (like him or not) etc etc etc. no idea if yas is such a competitor under a psuedenymn.

Sunbeam i totally agree. I was interested in what yas had to say, even though the dogs pictured were not the type i like they looked in good nick, not peak condition but a good start, howerver after his very off target rude remarks about me being cocky, the lack of an apology, and having gone back on another forum read a little about his experience and also his shirty remark to another member i certainly will not be looking to buy his book. I understand from what i have read he is some kind of conditioning coach for human athletes and was interested how his methods transfer to the canine.

he might know about humans and might be similar but imo get out there and do it with the dogs. Is alot more to conditioning dogs than writing or reading a few lines on the papper. As the saying goes...pratice what you preach...

  16. I tossed a stick into shallow water when Tego was about 2yrs and every time he retrieved it I would toss it a little further, till he got a feel for the river himself and i wears em out for a little bit but give about 10 or 15 minutes and their battery recharges.
Bullys are like nothing I have ever come across b4
