There is a lot of made up stories, and speculation with the American Bulldog history "along with a lot of breeds"- but all the stories will be proved right or wrong with the dog genome project here soon enough. There are already making great head way in new dna studies in how different dog breeds relate to, mixed with and are down from what breeds.

To my knowledge, American Bulldogs came after the APBT but the APBT descends from the old bullbaiting dogs from Europe who were crossed with terriers to add the gameness. The APBT as we know it today came in with the early immigrants from places like Ireland and such. J.P. Colby among others played a huge role in developing the breed into what it is today.

Nobody can really tell 100% sure how old the American bulldog is.
But Alan Scott was the first person to register American bulldog.

Scott breed Hunting/performance type American bulldogs
Johnson did breed Bully (More guard dogs)

I have a female from Alan Scott`s yard.
She is very similar to a APBT in many ways.

Many breeders have AB bloodlines with APBT in them.

Konfederat Kennel are breeding a line that they call Black Hybrids.
The Black hybrids often have alot of APBT blood in them.

Some very good AB`s also have APBT blood in them.

Here is a well known ped ine the AB world:

well this is always up for discussion and everybody has their opinion.....with that said my family is from Alabama (I currently live in Alabama) and my family has had these AB's (as they are now called) for a long, long time (they used to be called pit bull dogs but the name was changed in the 80's cuz everyone got them confused with the apbt, but also old english white, Alabama bulldog) anyhow.....I'm almost 40yrs old and currently own a scott type ab bitch that weighs 73#'s....she is always mistaken for a large white pit bull....my dad's side of the family used to get there bull dogs mainly from north east Alabama (going back to at least the 1930's) and these dogs were mainly white and looked like an apbt but they averaged in the 50-80# range......my mom's side of the family being from south Alabama had ab's but they were almost always solid white and built somewhat different than those from north Alabama....however both were used as farm dogs (the mainly white ones seemed alittle more laid back but all were great farm dogs)....anyhow both were great dogs but none of them were over 80#'s (never mind these bullmastiff type johnson dogs)......as a side note I took my son and daughter down to our camphouse for a youth hunt a couple weeks ago and took we took the bulldog, we stoped at this little gas station down in Hale county and got her out so she could stretch.....well these 3 old guys came out to see what they called a "hog dog" didn't know the breed as an AB or APBT or any other name just called her a hog dog.....I think in that statement lies the truth, you breed a dog for a purpose and over time a body type comes to the surface (form following function)

(form following function) I could not agree more Moloss. There is no denying that the ABs and APBT share some of the same blood.Weather this blood belonged to the American Bulldog or the Pitbull Terrier first is the question. Some say the APBT is the original bulldog and that the later was created from them.IMO the ABs and APBTs are very much the same because of function. In the days before papers a dog was considered to be a bulldog because he was used to bait bulls and other wild animals. Not because his parents were bulldogs. In the same sense a APBT that was catch weight would be considered a bulldog if catch work was his job.I don't think there will ever be a test that can sort all of this out after all these breeds are being combined by some still to this day.

That is a really good looking dog Moloss.

All of the AB strains have had a splash of this or a splash of that or this to achieve what they(the breeder) desired prior to the day and age of rigid paper standards.

The infusion of terrier blood brought the size of these dogs down to a more manageable size for handling in the pit and also made it much easier to snatch the dog up, hide him under your coat when you were running from the law, if you got raided fighting dogs. The strength, gameness, and heart, however, all came from the bulldog."

lol @ hiding the dogs from the law....it was legal back then

If you go to the true grit message board and go to the performance section ,you will come across some real cool and hard looking ABs.

This is a gyp I used to have. Lost a good pit catchdog to a big boar a few years back, decided to try an AB to catch. She was a good looking animal, but wasn't really what I was looking for in a catchdog. Gave her to my brother and got another pit.

Johnson Bulldogs arent even working Ambulls. Scott Type or Olde South White Bulldogs are the legit Ambulls. Johnson and Scott split paths due to differences.

Johnson Bulldogs are like the Modern Bully Pit or American Bully movement in the APBT community. Big, slow unathletic dogs that look scary and thats what most people want.

Never mind that most 120lb Johnson Bulldogs cant go for more than 5 min and due to their shortened faces have a weaker bite than a 85lb Scott Bulldog.
