Accused dog fighter ordered to pay thousands for care of impounded dogs

On Friday, a 42-year-old man, accused of running a dog fighting operation, was ordered to pay nearly $14,000 for the care of pit bulls who were seized last February, reported the Charlotte Observer.

Superior Court Judge Hugh Lewis, ordered Lefonze Williams to pay $13,698 for one month's care of 26 adult pit bulls and three puppies who were seized by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg, N.C., police.

At the time of the raid, which the authorities have determined to be one of the largest dog fighting operations investigated in the area, a dog fighting arena was discovered and many of the dogs had injuries which were consistent with having been fought.

Williams' defense attorney, Kevin Barnett, argued that his client was not a dog fighter, but instead, a dog breeder who had imported dogs from Russia and Europe. Barnett also stated that Williams "loves his dogs."

According to WCNC News, if Williams fails to pay for the dogs' care within the next five days, he will lose custody; if that happens, animal control will have to determine whether or not the dogs are suitable for adoption, or if they will have to be put down.

Barnett tried to convince the judge that the fee to care for the dogs was more than his client could afford, but Judge Lewis countered that argument by informing the attorney that if Williams could afford to import dogs all the way from Russia to North Carolina, he should be able to pay the fee.

Williams has been indicted on 36 counts of dog fighting, with each charge carrying a punishment ranging from four months to 39 months in prison.

what type of care do they give for 14k? we could keep that same number for a year if we had to on 14k & them be healthy.

They claim that 14 grand is for one month of care lol .. I would also like to know why it costs that much to care for 26 adult dogs and 3 puppies in a single month ... Sounds to me like they don't want to give him a chance to get the dogs back hence the outrageous figure.

Very Very Sad!! 14K for a month? Come the f... on. Really? They will try anything they can to pull these dogs out of the hands of people....now i do agree that there are people out there that do not deserve to own a field mouse let alone a APBT...but to use money against a man who probably has dogs in better shape and health than the judge himself is just flat out wrong....
