An abused 4-month-old pit bull mix puppy is recovering after he was found on the side of a road in Washtenaw County on Wednesday evening with a gruesome leg injury that will require his back leg to be amputated.

Animal cruelty investigators are seeking the public’s help in identifying the individual responsible for the abuse.

The puppy, who has been named Morgan, was found around 6:30 p.m. near Gotfredson and Geddes roads in Superior Township, just west of the Wayne County border, according to officials with the Humane Society of Huron Valley.

“Something had been tied so tightly around the leg that it cut off circulation, causing severe swelling,” Matt Schaecher, director of the society’s Animal Cruelty Investigation and Rescue, said in a statement. “The excruciating pain caused the dog to chew off his toes. An injury of this magnitude did not happen overnight. This poor dog was clearly neglected for a long period of time.”

The caller who found the puppy said he saw a silver van sitting alongside the road, but the van drove away when he approached it. He was unable to get a license plate number.

Veterinarians said the puppy’s back leg will need to be amputated. Marketing Director Deb Kern said the doctors hope the puppy makes a full recovery.

“He will be placed up for adoption after he’s been medically cleared,” Kern said in a statement.

Kern said to help with Morgan’s medical care, call 734-661-3573 or donate on the Huron Valley Humane Society’s website. Individuals with information are asked to call
