I can answer that question. Over the years any pure family of hounds is going to need to be crossed at sone point . Crossing for example Corvino family, with the Colby family would actually freshen up the gene pool because the. Colby blood being untainted would actually help that other family of hounds. In the older days one would be in good gracious with Howard H. Colby, ect. Let's not forget that Howard Hienzl bred "Dibo" The old rugged cross. Colby / Corvino cross. Now, science has changed to such an extent that the older breeders were certainly gifted. Millions of a dollars a year are spent on research in the racing Horse business. TDK made a post about hidden Colby in an old thread , Scatter bred. That explains how much hidden Colby is really out there. Imy not an authority on breeding practice. It does make since why an old proven pure Colby hound crossed with another old proven family of hounds would freshen it up.

Cajun... Exactly..... After not getting the Diamond pup I was offered a pup for $1000 dollars, from an Uncle who
lives like a block away. Super nice people. But at the very last minute..I thought "What am I actually buying for
my thousand bucks?!" A NAME ? or a working dog. Yeah I always wanted to own a piece of "History"
But.... I bought a pup with the name White's KA 4 times in the fourth Gen. for $400. Who do you fellows
think would run better at the track? all variables aside

Honestly , no matter what lineage, or what breeder, you get a pup from there is know absolute guarantee it will turn out for you. However, Bama has made a few outstanding suggestions from experience I agree. If I was going after a straight up performance bulldog it wouldn't be a pure Colby hound. I was fortunate enough to get a honest pair back in 2009 that certainly are deep game, good confirmation, outstanding temperament. However being pure for 120 plus years can they compete at Top levels in pure form? Absolutely not. Thats why they need to be crossed. An honest example for me is a few years back I bought a pair of Hollingsworth, Gaston, Redboy. Hounds from a very nice person with a great reputation for being honest ect . They are just naturally hard to the touch, Musle development, Very super intense drive, super hard mouth, ect. . Having said that they have some hidden Colby in them. At the end of the day as TDK would say , more important than a pedigree, is who bred the dogs and why. Also good dogs are where you find them. There are some great breeders right here on game dog. There is something special about a pure Colby hound I must say . Any family that has dedicated there life to keep a line of bulldogs going alone is worthy of Respect. Just my opinion. Good luck to you ! Dex

This kind of says it all, although I have plenty of Colby Dogs way back in mine, if you looked even when Colby was at the top, he recognized he had to bring other breeding's in to keep them competitive. As of 10 years ago I know of very successful people adding Colby line for A boost of health and ability! You can only keep A family (strain) pure so long! Then you need to introduce something that will compliment your dogs! A good line bred Colby into an line bred Eli or vise versa! example

The Colby dogs don't need a cross! Ch Princess didn't need a cross, Ch Rueben didn't need a cross, Ch Scarface didn't need a cross and Ch Diamond didn't need a cross. What the Colby dogs need is a REAL PERFORMANCE breeder to work with the family!

I agree 100% with crazyhorse on this. Becuase the man behind the dogs are the biggest factor. theres no doubt in BB mind that some good'ns would turn up if decided to mess with colby dogs. it just take time and work just like anything else.

Good point as Ch. Major didn't need one . Nor does his belly mate sister Townsend's Raven Oden.

No good family of working dogs needs a cross. Breeding honest and true gamedogs that is. But most people cross because they want to bring the best of both to the forefront, can be tedious process but also worth it if done right

Crosses aren't always made of necessity, a good honest gamedog can win in some circles and be disposed of quickly in others. People usually cross two dogs based on their working ability and what they bring to the table, trying to compliment traits of each dog to create sure winners .....

I have given this post a lot of thought. Crazy horse has a great point about performance breeders. Mr Hollingsworth came to mind. He started with Pat Patrick hounds, certainly wasn't known for matching Dogs, yet what He became known over time was putting down some all game litters. Hollingsworth blood is so heavily guarded it's almost impossible for a common working man to find, or afford it in its pure form. Maybe some water'ed down blood might be available. Mr. R Crabb was known for breeding a few all game litters. TDK, told me personally that they were good friends. How much risk is evolved in the USA today besides the hard work and time. I am grateful for all of the folks that have risked it all to keep the Bulldogs we have today Tried and True . David Tant lived about 20 miles away from me back when he got in trouble . True story , Arthur Ravenel in Charleston S.C. The Tresurer in office got caught with a Kilo of Cocaine at the same time all this news was focused on Tant. The Ravenel story just went away because He cried on t.v. saying he needed drug treatment ect. So the local Charleston news made the news all about David Tant to cover up, Instead of looking at some real problems that needed to be addressed. Performance breeding is a must for are hounds to progress and survive in the future, but at what cost ? I love a real bulldog. Game-ness, Temperament, conformation, ect. I would love to live to see The old Colby line back at the top of the game oneday. A few crosses are doing real good for sure. As you said in your post a few pockets of pure Colby dogs are winning a few here and there.

    Nice post.
So if the Colbys chose to cross their dogs then they would still be pure Colby dogs right?
