  1. I ready something this morning about finish , cant find it back
I see many threads about adding certain traits into a line

    DONT OVERTHINK

Most of us have just been lucky , people dont admit it but its true
nobody can predict for a certainty how a litter will turn out
to many equations in the box , to many marbles

we can only after doing heavy linebreeding for years expect some certain elements
been linebreeding my own shit for twenty years and I cross fingers and hope
    dont believe the hype

This topic has been finished very quickly ? No courtesy ?
Well, crossing fingers and hoping for the best might be a good idea.
In- and linebreeding for generations will fix some certain traits for sure. The good and the bad.
And that's just the simple difference that comes with breeding. The good and the bad.
Knowing (or even better 'being') a long time breeder with a family of game, well pacing dogs who have stamina and a finish is ... well, a good start, I guess.
If that can be said about the average of a 'line', then, well, what will be, if they also get some ability and/or mouth here or there ?
I really like a good finish. It's rare to see. A dog without a finish can never be rated as a 10.
A family of dogs with a finish is ... a dream !!! But ... of course ... hard to ...
Not finishing when the time is right is a bad trait for me ! >:)
I like the topic. There is some space for rumbling, lol.

True finish can be very elusive and as far as one dog throwing finish in the next is not the norm.

It can be bred for thru selection just like any other trait but it is not all that common.

It surely sells the puppies tho, a good 'blood on the walls, guts on the floor' story has sold many a puppy. True or not.

We had some dogs bred down out of GRCH Virgil and they had as much finish as I have seen off of one stud dog.

When someone has it you have to ride it til it falls.

A single dog might even throw the trait on a regular basis.
But with a family of dogs it's - like you know - all about percentages.
A breeder who does not care about finish might never see this at his own dogs.
A breeder who goes for this might have better percentages.
At least this is how I understand 'breeding'.

Sure ... if you are not a breeder ;):D

Of all the traits one could breed for I am thinking finish would be the most elusive. (especially not being a breeder, LOL)

True finish will take all the other traits and combine them to get to a certain point to see, choose and complete a finish.

There was a son off GRCH Virgil that hit the throat upon release, each and every time. He had siblings and half sibling that showed it but were more methodical about their approach. We had a son of Virgil that looked like one of those boxers that threw two or three rounds of half-hearted jabs until he found when and where the heavy right hand would land. From there it was BAM-BAM-BAM until the end. That son of Virgil was a lot like that. Seen the feeling out process in several of those dogs and then they grabbed a gear a fair portion showed finish.

It is hard enough to breed game dogs with ability then added one more thing to the mix will prove to be difficult.

'Each and every time' shows me you are talking about throat dogs.
The other one 'BAM-BAM-BAM until the end' sounds like a true finisher.

Isn't this a beautyful fact ? Sure, it is >:)

Finish, like gameness can be a very subjective topic.

For some, the seeing a spot and being relentless and unyielding and consistently ramping up intensity til its over constitutes finish.

Some consider the dog that throat checks to be a dog with with finish.

And then there is the opinion that all game dogs show finish. Again, a subjective definition, but the simplest way to define gameness is the willingness to continue, then if he simply does not stop 'continuing' he will eventually finish.

Maybe if there were a time table of how long it takes.....well that explanation is already reserved for destroyer.

From there the word ACE pops up, from there the multiple definition of gameness will come back around all the way to my favorite (actually least favorite) term in the dogs, DEAD GAME.

And by the time we got that far more than likely us older folks would have already forgotten how the conversation started as it can quickly become a never ending circle.

The marbles in my head sound like a handful of rocks in an aluminum can right now.
