I don't know what happened above as I hit a wrong key or something.I was going to say I wouldn't add undereducated as a handicap when it comes to Bulldogs.Plenty of old timers lacked education but just had a nack when it came to breeding Bulldogs.

A very good post! Really got me thinking, as the science of breeding and "training" dogs access to better health care and info, on the status of keeping A tight breed family healthy, to better and better quality feed, the way I see it if A long period of time goes by with out learning your stagnating! I'm always open to any idea that makes sense and improve the over all quality of what I'm looking for!

Although your statement allows for a number of counter-examples, i understand and respect your point.

I prefer post from practitioners like yourself, TROTLINE, slim12 and others over a rant like mine.

If you don't mind me asking, how did the Hannah dog work out (i'll understand if you choose not to answer)?

  6. If you write a book I'll read it because I love getting information from you old timers

I would think the internet is about the biggest mentor going now. The answers are pretty much a point and click away.

Sometimes that is a good thing and sometimes not so much.

I was coaching my son's 8 year old basketball team some years back. As I worked with a kid on taking two steps and using the back board for a lay up he quickly let me know which buttons to press on XBox in order to take two steps, elevate and posterize someone.

    The dogs are no different.

The kicker is at some point someone will need to take two steps and make that lay up.

Odds are he will not be prepared.

As someone just coming up with their first two bulldogs, I can tell you for certain having a real mentor is essential. True, there is a shit ton of information on the internet but the problem is so much of it is incorrect, misleading or just plain old contradictions that without having someone with knowledge and experience to guide you there’s o lt so much you can get and even less you’ll get right.

I was an internet warrior for a while even posting some straight up bull shit here early on. It took me finding someone legit teaching me some hard lessons (like to shut my damn mouth because I look and sound like a moron) to even get started.

Thanks to this persons guidance I’m now an infant in bulldogs but am able to pick out the legit from the crazy or wrong and have my first two dogs. THAT is where the real learning will begin. Yeah I’ve had all kinds of experience with dogs and mutts and training but that doesn’t equate to squat. Some of it has helped - my male mutt is way more DA than my bulldog bitch whose about as cold as they come. But I’m making progress building her confidence and basic obedience. She trusts me and we take baby steps every day learning together. I’m going to work on conditioning and wp with her.

There’s been some here that helped little bits here and there and there’s tons of legit info to learn from here through reading. But without having the dog and someone to guide you the information is only as good as everything else on the internet - words on a screen.

Now I’m going to go back to keeping my damn mouth shut and go work my bitch. Cheers!

Good point as always, I must say that with a world of info at our fingertips it has changed so many things. Hands on we know, trail and error is the #1 way to learn. I'm 52 now and I'm still learning new things and ways to this very day. Not only with Bulldogs, with Life. Im
'still " Teachable" to this very day. I have asked member's for guidance over the years . I found out it's a small world. Lady Rampage (rip) was a 1st class act. She guided me beyond bulldogs. Before she When pased away , she told me personally that "TDK " helped her more than anyone in all aspects of this World's greatest breed. I don't know him personally, however if I had an honest question, he would be happy to help me . I think that some of the great old timers just got shot out if you will based on the younger generation not using there manners. Being respectful, polite, and courteous will take you a long ways in this world. I used to hear the older folks say manners it take you further in life than money. One thing I've learned about myself is , if I already know what I'm going to do , why am I going to bother my mentor with asking them what should do??? This is the case a lot of times. Yes I'm guilty of it too. But you take a man that's got 40 60 years in with these dogs in some ways that might be stubborn and set in their ways, an honest example, Mr. Hollingsworth believed that all black bulldogs were curs & would not allow them to be in his breeding program. I don't believe that to be true. But his breeding program speak''s for itself. There known as one of the greatest linages of Bulldogs on the planet. Most of us know that he got his dog from Pat Patrick, and yes he put his name on them. What made mr. Hollingsworth so special when it came to his breeding program??? I think Indian Sonny said it best referring to JP. Colby. A Gift , "Gifted" I think personally it also had a lot to do with who he placed his dogs with, real people who would give him a fair chance. I in my opinion that still holds true to this very day. some of the greatest match dogs on the planet didn't even turn on until they were three or even four years old. Of course it's sitting always the case. Eaton Old-Timers like Howard heinzl said that if they wanted turned up by 18 months he was getting them off the yard. Until time, trial and error ect. taught him better. Having a great mentor who has been there is a win-win situation for someone who's teachable.
