Hi there, I have a question guys, think your knowledge could be helpfull.

I planned to take my dog with me at work, i'm negociating this with my boss but I reckon it should be ok. We have some free place behind our building and I would like to put a chain spot for him there. The thing is that my 4 years old dog is absolutely not used to the chain and i would know if you guys have some tips/advices for that because if he spend his whole day screaming because he is chained it's gonna be a problem.

Now he's staying 10 hours per day alone in my appartement without any problem, never bark, scream or anything else but i'm not sure things gonna be so easy in a place is not used to and with a chain.

I thought I have to find a way to make him love his chain, maybe during the first time puting him on the chain only for a few time and coming back playing tug with him or something he really like. Maybe trying to feed him everyday on the chain or something like this I don't know. I'm gonna have some holidays and so some time for coming at work with him when nobody's there so if you have any advices it would be really appreciate.

    Thanks

    F.

Don't know where u at and what the temp has been but its been a hot Sumbitch here.Make sure he has good shade all day and plenty of water.Going from a climate controlled apartment to a chain spot in the heat of the summer is tough.Good luck.

All sound advice especially the shade and water. I'd cut a 3-4 foot chain and walk him on a leash with the chain attached so he's dragging it along your walk. That should get him used to what it will be like once you tie him out at work. The knuckle bone will definitely keep him occupied for the first few days while he's getting used to the new routine.

Certainly better than being home all day in a crate while you're working. I bet he'll love it. Good luck.

Thank you all for the answers!

The knuckle bone sounds really like a good and easy idea, gonna try it!

Actually my apartment is nothing like a climate controlled apartment... to be honest when it's really a hot day it's better to be outside under a tree than inside. Temps outside should not often exceed 100 Fahrenheit, most of the time around 90 normally.
And right now in my apartment it's 78 Fahrenheit and it's not a really a hot day so I think that won't be a problem.

There will be some shade and he's obviously gonna have all the water he want. He's already used to drag chain and I will slowly begin to chain him, for the moment he was not really happy but we did only a few try.

He's not in a crate all day he has a whole room for him but I planned to take another dog and I don't want to let one in a crate for 10 hours non stop, I don't feel good with that idea and I don't have a room for each dog so taking one with me sounds the solution. And if I can take one, I'll be able to take two I guess Lmfao

And that's gonna be my motivation to go to work by bike or by walk instead of taking a car/bus.

One more time thanks for the advices! Have a nice day

More than likely the dog will pitch a bitch, regardless of what you try to distract them with. Almost every dog I put on the chain after raising them in the house went ape shit the first time I put them on the chain. Everything from barking to whining and even chain fighting. Most of them calmed down after a day or two, but I had one that woke up and went to sleep screaming until I had to bring the crazy fool back inside to keep from losing my mind. You might want to look into a shock collar just in case. Those things work wonders.

Also are you familiar with chain setups? Do you have a good collar ? Right way and wrong way to do it.

That's my fear. I'm sure he is gonna scream the first times, I just hope he will stop after a while.

At the end of July my firm will be closed for two weeks, I'm gonna come with him each day and we will work on it. If we fail he will stay home and I'll raise my next dog on the chain.

Whatever thank you for your advice.

No i'm not familiar with chain setup but i've read everything I could find and i'll probably come back here with some question once i'll have clean and prepare the space.

There's nothing wrong with leaving an animal alone for 10 hours unless you live in a Disney movie....

My biggest question in all this is if the dog does good in your apartment, and you only have one dog, why not just keep doing what obviously works and keep him at home where he's already content?.

Is that a joke mate? I walk my dog 1 hour each day before going to work and when I'm back I spend at least 1h30 with him outside and you're telling me that I'm causing suffering to my dog?? He's walk at least 10km a day during the week and have some proper workout 5 days per week, what's about yours? That's sounds like a fucking bad joke if you want my opinion, it's a dog mate not a kid. I'm for quality time, not quantity. Do you think a dog really enjoy just staying at your side when you're doing you're own stuff? He's alone during the day but when I'm with him I'm really with him! If you think you can't leave a dog for 10h it's maybe because you're not able to offer some proper work out to your dog but trust me, a dog won't suffer from a situation like this if you offer him quality time before and after work.
I have to admit that I'm more than surprised to read a comment like this on this forum

Because taking my dog at work with me would give me the opportunity to offer him more and more time and excercise. I would go with him by walk or by bike, I live in a small village at 8km from my working place so he would be walk and exercise more each day, he would have more space, he would see more people and I would be able to offer him a few time during the day.
And because I planned to take another dog next year so that would solve my space problem.
Sounds like a win win situation for me

There's nothing wrong by the way with leaving your dog 10 hours a day. Most people have to work for a living so leaving fido alone for that long is pretty typical in most dogs lives. Dont be too surprised at comments like jacobs, many walks of life and personalities come through here. I didnt realize you had a job were you could still often interact with the dog. Most aren't that lucky.
