Old Nuttall/New Nuttall

Anyone know the difference? I see a lot of mention of the 2.
A pretty important Patterdale guy told me that Nuttall dogs were used by a lot of the fell packs in England. Some of the guys started complaining his dogs were too rough so he switched up his breeding to soften them up.

Another thing I heard was that Nuttall changed his program to accommodate the american public who preferred the smaller dogs.
I've heard that Miner was the dividing line.Before hard,after, smaller and less hard.

I've seen some of both.I saw a little 6-7 pound bitch from the new Nuttall that was crazy game.she ended up losing her front leg to a GH down south I think.

The Old Nuttall stuff is often harder, a little bigger, has heavy bones and short legs. But you can't say this about every dog, it's only a rule not a law.

 

Thnx Snake.another thing I noticed about Nuttall dogs is they seem to have a little bigger ear.Look at pix of them in contrast to others.kinda like the old midnight cowboy dogs did.

I had only one pure Nuttall female, who was a back breed to Nuttall's Mickey. My main stud and best male is a son of a pure Nuttall male and a Nuttall X Gould female. The Gould stuff is out of Gould's Demon, Gould's Shovell, Gould's Cracker and Harcombe's Jack. Also there is an unknown female called Gordon Mason's Redstuff in the fourth generation of his pedigree. ...He and his offspring is exact that what I like. But I'm a wild boar hunter and have only a few earthwork. And this male is perfect in my eyes, for my work and my hunting style. Other Terriermen have other ideas of their perfect dog. I need dogs about 35 lbs and about 15 inches in shoulder. Some of my dogs are too big for fox, but most of them are able to enter a european badger burrow. And I need hard dogs who have a sure grip and a lot of strength, because I prefer it to hunt with blade and spear.

does the old nuttal blood carry over to the new and just selectively bred to not be so hard
or did he just use new blood with out any old???

a friend has a tight bred nuttal male thats hard as a hammer and doesnt like any other animals period,,,
he was passed around the terrier men that didnt like this trait and ended up with bulldog men...

Crow when you say HARD you mean hard as in the style they hunt and not neccesacarly how hard thier mouth is,,, right???

If so it seems SW has the term a bit confused,,,

No I did mean hard as in rugged-banzai,not hard mouthed.

The older Nuttall were noted for their hardness in contrast to the newer Nuttall.

And I'm not sure. I think the new is offshoot of the old(?),cause they seem to trace back in some cases maybe selectively bred softer?

Rumours are that is modern stuff is not the dogs they once were. We haven't had dogs directly off him for years so couldn't say either way, we are running Nuttall/Wheeler at the minute and they are doing the business.....

 

Had stuff out of Zulu and was very hard
