i don't have to feed many but i've thought about breeding rabbits, since they reproduce like rats, and supplement with tallow. but I'm not sure if it would actually be cheaper after all is said and done. i find the out of the way trip for feed more of a pain than the cost personally. and unlike the south, super markets don't have the cheap tripe, liver and turkey necks i used to get.

also, saiyagin is spot on. so much food, along with clothes etc., is wasted and trashed because it is somehow cheaper than donating it, or to protect companies from liability in our litigious, lawsuit happy society.

It really depends on how many you are feeding. Lol I looked into it once, I'd need way too many rabbits feeding 12+ dogs. I'd be a rabbitman instead LMAO. I'm a chef at an establishment that pulls in about 1.8 million in revenue every year so I have a vast supply of trimmings from meat as well as anything not used in a timely manner. I incorporate this into a diet of mainly diamond natural mixed with the retriever hi pro. It works well enough I'm routinely asked "what the fuck are you feeding these dogs", and normally by someone that uses a "higher quality" than me. Unless shaping a dog for a sporting contest I don't really see the need to break the bank

Great post. Some of the best diets consists of a 'good deal' or a 'freebie' or a 'perk'. We had a few dogs when I was in the service. The house we rented was on the farm of a guy who cut meat in a grocery store by day and processed deer at home. We fed raw. I mean straight raw by the 5 gallon bucket. There was no rhyme nor reason with what the dogs got. What ever came out of the bucket as we walked by was there diet.

It was a good solid diet for the dogs but it was free for us which I thought was killer.

When I was low on the Dough, I had great results with JOY dog kibble. Dogs loved it. I can't get it by me anymore.
They do sell it in Pa. But it's too far for me to drive. I also fed a bunch of Shepherds Diamond at one time ,
until it turned out to all be Poison. Anybody on here remember that?! Giant re-call. I had a pallet of it!!
I just picked up Perdue chicken quarters for .59 a pound at shop-rite. A leg for B-fast and the thigh 4 dinner,
Dogs will be Lean but healthy. lots of fresh clean spring water from my well. If anyone on here knows how to
feed a dog for under .50 cents a day please share. I have a pal who goes to Paterson Nj and gets Chicken
Backs in bulk for.39 cents per pound ..but I ain't getting shot for Dog food!

Great posts, you all. Very true what Saiy said about stores throwing away food. If that isn't messed up I'm not sure what is.

It is true. My buddy use to get all kinds of produce for his chickens and pigs from the grocery store. it went from "we can't give it to you, but we will set it out back". To "we have to throw it away, but it is at 4PM, hint hint" To now it goes in the dumpster with a padlock.

    A true waste.

Next time I make my way to the Co.Op I'll try and get A name on that bulk feed! It is high quality and I know several kennels that can afford to feed anything they deem best to there hunting dogs and they choose this! A dollar A pound in 200 lb. bulk isn't what you would call cheap but my dogs love it and I feed less (except winter) I guess it comes down to what works for you! Because of elevation and very cold winters I supplement with meat and chicken and sometimes build A fire and warm everything up!

i go to a greyhound breeders yard who is feeding 300 dogs , he buys huge quantities of meat, fish ,chicken mince , and green tripe and sells it cheaply, approx 25cent us$ per lb i also get knackery meat cheap ie cattle not fit for human consumption but perfect pet food thats also around 25 cent lb

When I had a large yard of dogs, I simply bought my food by the pallet, and I fed Diamond Natural Chicken and Rice. I bought directly from a wholesale place, and I saved a ton of money as a repeat customer for over a decade.

That's because he's feeding his dogs "properly" all 300 of them at that.

    Why?

It' because he understands, realises and demands the benifits...

Let's not forget these dogs are running for short periods of time. NOTHING like the races some of you all are expecting your dogs to run AND heal up from.

Please do us all a favor. Ask him how much he thinks his dogs would decline feeding them a "good quality, low budget kibble", then take note and report back. Seriously.

Oh and shake his hand for me.

    Thanks

i posted just to show top quality feed can be gotten at cheap prices, your local butchers or supermarket is not cheap places to be buying petfood , just as a matter of fact he sells cheap kibble aswell , but i have no interest in it

If Victor is that cheap, then it Diamond Naturals is probably the same price. I know for a 40lb bag, at my TSC, it was about 30$ but the grain free is more. Look out for expired or soon to expire bags, they always have them at our petshops or TSC for a lot less. I always call first just to see if they have any expired bags.
