i was talking to a friend and he said that there's no way any dog with an underbitte could have a bite anywhere as good as a dog with a scissor bite. but the original bulldogs had a slight underbite. just out of curiosity were there ever any game dogs with a noticeable underbite?

So many great dogs were undershot that it really doesn't seem to matter much. A dog rarely closes his mouth completely in a match anyway and the dogs ability to take a hold isn't greatly influenced on which way the teeth mesh. A dog that is badly overshot is at a distinct disadvantage as it is hard for him to take a good quick hold. A badly undershot dog is at a disadvantage to but perhaps not as much.

If a dog can take a good hold easily then don't worry too much. More of a concern when they lose their canines and don't impact the same damage with a good hold.

I can't remember the name of the dog but he was owned by Bert S and campaigned by Bert and Joanie and he had no hangers and won a big show in ole Mexico and on the way home Bert took a wrong turn and came out in Airazona I believe..The dog was confiscated but Bert wound up gettin him back which is another story..He actually took 2 dogs that day and won both and both were confiscated at the border. And yes he got both dogs back.

The dog with no hangers went to a fancier after Bert got him back and lived the good life.

Your friend is a idiot as that is a Myth as dogs of any breed with slight underbites can bite just as hard or harder then dogs with scissors bite.

A lot of game dogs have slight underbites because most breeders dont breed for perfect conformation scissors bites.

Another myth is head size. Some people think that a dog with a bigger head is able to bite harder then a dog with a smaller head which is not always true.

^some wise words right there. i'd place money on a stafford or pit doing more damage than a 150 lb st.bernard in the same time span. i remember seeing a study that placed the siberian husky close to the kangal in bite strength.

I dont believe in bite-tests. Every individual dog has a different bite and you never know if the dog really bites as hard as he can in a bite-test. Im sure an St.bernard could bite really hard if someone could get him in beast-mode!

Imo. As long as there K9s. Fit right i dont think it makes a difference. Saiyagin made a good point also , Just because a bulldogs head is bigger doesnt mean they bite harder. A good gamedog bites hard because it wonts too ! JMO......Dex

I don't think it makes much of a difference as long as it's not too much. The hardest biting dog I've ever had, had an underbite. His flirt pole was 39 1/2 feet. lolz.

A dog with the biggest head Ive seen on an APBT can barley chew his food, let alone bite hard! LOL!

One thing Ive seen mentioned a lot by old timers is, dogs with very bull terrier typed heads, narrow and long muzzles, is that they SHOULD bite hard. Something about that head shape gets people talking and brings up stories of what theyve seen from dogs with that shape head.
