    Hey

I am going to change to raw soon and I heard that viruses and things like Salmonella can still mess up a dog when giving raw chicken....

I wanted to know if I freeze the chicken for say 72 hours will it call off any harmful viruses/bacteria?

    Cheers

Feeding raw chicken is fine....a wolf never had a freezer.

No, and a dogs gut passes meat and bone through it much faster than ours so the risk of salmonella is damn near nil. You stand more of a risk of your dog contracting salmonella when feeding kibble than raw.

The bulk of our meals are chicken and our dogs are fine, never had an issue.

Now wild caught meats should be frozen for a minimum of 3-4 weeks to kill off parasites, but nothing from the store needs that

  4. The domestic dog is several THOUSANDS of years removed from wolves. That argument is invalid.

Regardless the food passes through the dog too fast. Dogs won't get salmonella. You might though so wash everything well.

True but their intestinal tract is very much the same. A better way to put it would be, wild/feral dogs wouldnt freeze nor cook their prey...

I also wouldnt say dogs cant or wont get salmonella because they can and do, but the chances of that happening on raw are slim to none.
They arent little people, their guts are made to eat that sort of stuff.

I feed raw all the time, dogs are designed to eat raw. It's nature. Much more likely to find a problem with kibble that gets contaminated.

No possible way can your dog get sick from the raw chicken, the chicken or any meat used in your dog food has diseased and left over food usually from what the humans won't eat so a nice thigh, leg or breast from your human food section in a shop or grocery store is going to be a 100% better. Yes dogs are quite removed from the wolf but the basic genetics and digestion is still very similar and almost the same, wolves maybe a little robust but not much. Humans would be taken in the same way as we wouldn't have dogs until humans appeared, so we been together for a long time and we haven't change much either.

No need to freeze for 72 hours or any hours.

chicken meat is an excellent source of protien, however, the energy contributions to the diet is relative to the fat content which can vary largly.chicken meat is low in Iron. it is also lower in Copper and Vitamin B12, important blood forming nutrients. chicken meat diets need to be supplemented with Iron and B-Group Vitamins along with Cobolt, copper and some Calcium, if not your dog may become Anaemic within 2-3 weeks.
storing whole chicken mince containing skin may contain Bacteria, such as Salmonella spp. remove skin and Freeze 24-36 hours.

Well when feeding a proper raw diet the dog gets all those nutrients from the other meats, bones and organs. So its not really an issue, unless of course you are improperly feeding your dog

unfortunately some people don't do the proper research in order to find out what nutrients can be found from other saurces....
    lol'''hello... there we go.

just to help some maybe here are some average values per 100g.

    CHICKEN MEAT ONLY/ NO SKIN......METABOLISABLE ENERGY......CRUDE PROTEIN%g.......FAT%g......CALCIUMmg........IRONmg
    ...............................................107..................................20.3...........................5...............6.....................0.6
    CULL HEN/NO SKIN......................165..................................190............................10..............5.5..................0.45
    SKIN/BOILED..............................223..................................16.1...........................17.1............10..................0.7
    MINCED WHOLE(no gut or feathers)..250................................21.2..........................19.4............200(WITH BONE)..1.0
    NECKS MINCED WITH BONE.............233................................13.2...........................18.6...........800(MORE BONE)...1.0
    FEET/BOILED MINCED WHOLE..........96..................................15..............................5...............2100..................3.0

and to assume people feeding a raw diet are doing it right would be wrong, youde be supprised at how many get it wrong, so yes it can be an issue.
