I am not fond of a bitch that would eat her pups. Besides the obvious of loosing the litter and then having to hand feed for weeks, I just believe it is against nature for the mother to eat or kill her litter "unless she detects that there is something genetically wrong with a pup". But for a gypsy just to kill and eat her own offspring, makes me believe she is mentally unstable. Just my opinion of coarse.

yeah unless she was an exceptional animal i would probably put that bitch down.

no she's an amazing bitch just not a good mother this is her 1st litter at 4yrs old

I don't think know one is but mentally unstable I think not cause her prey drive is crazy!! I was thinking this might happen because of how she's acts around others animals now I know for sure I'll save this pup and sit back an enjoy my bitch no more having pups for her.

To me she is exceptional the only way I put down a dog is if they are human aggressive other than that we going to live life to the fullest

  9. I had a good bitch that would eat all the pups. Some times she would let them get up 2-3 weeks old. She would leave some feet sometimes! I took them and gave them to and old bitch that had pups and she raised them!

Why not just muzzle the bitch that way the pup can nurse without you worring about her eating it. When it done nursing take it away and unmuzzle the dam. That way you don't have to bottle feed and hopefully the dam learns and it won't happen next litter.

    Stillborn or Unhealthy Pups
In nature, when one or more members of a litter are unhealthy or stillborn, they put the rest of the litter at risk. A dam’s instinct will tell her that she must remove the unhealthy and stillborn puppies from the den. Most of the time, domestic dogs will simply reject unhealthy puppies, pushing them away from the nest. They may carry stillborn puppies away from the nest or “bury” them someplace in the house. However, if instinct takes over and the puppies are young enough, the dam might kill and eat unhealthy puppies, as well.

Personally this is the only reason I would accept. Nature puts in every animal the natural instinct of survival of it's own kind, and especially for the mother (mostly mammals and birds) her own offspring.
I wouldn't care how exceptional I thought she was, I wouldn't want her any longer. But you said no more litters for her, so problem solved!

sometimes they lack calcium or they are just hungry or excited or not used to see little pups moving around like mice . do what n-ca ring said and muzzle and feed the pup then take it away .

I've had one that did this in all my years. Problem is, bitches that do this are more likely to get worse than they are better about it. What you do with her is your business, so my advice is to just not breed her again. Simple.

I have one that does that and she will be dropping in a few weeks. This will be her third litter and she has ate pups each litter the first one only three was left I figd it was nature. The last time I stayed with her more and found she was doing it at night. Her drive is just so high she doesn't like anything animal related. With humans and kids she's a sweetheart, now long as I took her away at night then brought her back during the day everything was fine. I'll jus make sure to do that from day one this time. And like you said she is too good to put down maybe she knows how to pick a pup cause we love the ones that reach maturity..

One thing not mentioned is, that you COULD possibly arrange a surrogate mother, if she is just one of those MUST breed bitches. Just a thought as to another possibility. Good luck.
