Picking the right litter is first step and probably the most important step to getting a good pup but there are things that you can look for to get the best pup in that litter. Like i said earlier i don't care to go into detail. It took me many years of observing many litters and many years of people telling me it can't be done before i got the knowledge and confidence to be able to do it.

All i am saying is it is very possible and people shouldn't be telling other people that its impossible, that's all.

Another thing, i never once said that i can pick out the gamest pup or which are curs or which are game. I wish I could, but i do believe that that "may" be impossible.

And Mag, i actually like the ones that sit back and watch the world go by and i will keep a close eye on those to see what else they have to offer....

There no way of knowing wat pup will turn out to be the better dog! B u t like someons stated earlier I like to sit for hours abd sed the act up with each other I also take my house keys that has a leather timberland tag on them shake the keys so that the whole litter hears a noise that they have never heard then drop the key to the ground and see wat pup comes to the keys to check them out then I wait to see who pit them up by the leather tag and brings it back to the rest of the litter then I wanna see who will come over to that pup that has the keys and see if that pup will share on claim them as its own! Thats if im picking a pup from a buddys litter if it my own breeding I like to take a nice size piece of cow hide and drop it in their puppy pen and watch the one that has claimed the hide get chased around by the rest! And even that does not mean those puppies will work out the best had 5out of 7turn on very early and the other 2 be puppies and by the age of 3 three of the early starter were only good for pet homes! Picking puppies is like the game of life its all in the roll of the DICE!

If I'm going to buy a pup or pick one up off a yard that I haven't been able to see the litter often. I almost always pick the ugliest. Lol
Reason being is similar to your story. Got an ugly, shy, timid, and low confidence pup that turned out to be my favorite animal.

In my youth, a wise, old, famous dogger once told me............................You have 4 pups. All healthy and normal. You use all your intuitive powers, secrets, cunning, and little secret signs only YOU know, and pick out the two you just know are destined to make it big. AND KEEP THE OTHER TWO!

Its not every litter that you can pick out the best pup, some litters are just too similar or nothing stands out. But when there has been a pup that stood out i picked it. Maybe it was luck the dog turned out or maybe i just know something you don't... you don't have to be a hater just cause you can't do it.

Even the most keen eyes have overlooked some that went on to good and even great. So while you can develop a good eye for the dogs sometimes you just luck up or luck out. That's just the way its always been and will be. The following excerpt will show a combination of having both a good eye and lucking up.

" Earl Tudor visited Heinzl's yard and took a liking to Dumbo. Mr. Heinzl offered Mr. Tudor any dog on his yard, trying to convince him to purchase a good dog. In spite of everything, Tudor took Dumbo home and changed his name to Dibo. Dibo was stolen shortyl after and was sold to a black restaurant owner, who named him Runt, Frank Ferris later changed all the incorrect papers. The pup wouldn't hit a lick until it was 2 1/2 years old, but when it did, it was an cae dog from that day forward! "

And the rest they say is History.

sounds like a sales pitch that will convince the the beginner to buy the crap pup.

I have never known any OUTSTANDING dog that did not stand out in its litter in "some way"!

Thanks for that. That is proof to the people who know and the rest, you can continue with your ignorance.

LOL Well, does it? That's a little presumptuous. He was, in fact, a great old dog man who never peddled a thing. He was merely trying to make a light hearted point that if you think you can see anything in an infant which translates to what it will be in full maturity, you're fooling yourself. Overall health being all you can see in one.
If one fancies himself or herself clairvoyant, that's fine. I don't have a crystal ball, nor can I foresee the future. I have always based my likelihoods on what bitch is in the stand, and what male she is being bred to.

If people where that good at picking pups thier wouldnt be any reason to keep a whole litter anymore just pick the ones that will make it and shoot the rest ...yeah right lol..Thier is no way you can look at a pup and tell if he or she will make the grade..I wish it were that easy as does everyone else Im sure.
