Man Tattoos His Pitbull: Acceptable Or Animal Cruelty?

A tattoo artist, disabled Iraq War veteran, and father of three in North Carolina, Ernesto Rodriguez, is under fire for tattoing his pitbull, Duchess. The incident drew attention after Rodriguez posted a (now removed) photo of Duchess’s tattoo on his Facebook page. The tattoo is on five-month-old Duchess’s underbelly and Rodriguez claims the symbol is of her bloodline and meant to identify her.

The Stokes County Health Department and Animal Control department investigated but filed no charges. Rodriguez was, however, issued a cease-and-desist order for tattoing humans without a proper permit.

    Rodriguez told local news media:
“I didn’t just plop her on the bed and tattoo her. She was already [on] on anesthetics. She was asleep, completely asleep. And I even used topical anasthetic, too, on top of that, on the skin. So she didn’t feel anything. She got up, she’s been fine. I love my dogs.”
While Rodriguez removed the photo he originally posted on his ‘Planet Ink Tattoos’ Facebook page, he posted this update:

Many continue to express their disappointment, anger, and outrage. While some stated Rodriguez applied anesthesia to his dog illegally, Rodriguez claims the dog was actually anesthetized at the veterinarian’s when she was getting her ears cropped:

    Others are not buying it:

Animal advocate Caleb Scott, of “N.C. Voters for Animal Welfare”, is also skeptical, claiming that Rodriguez wrote he was “bored” in his initial Facebook post about the reason behind the tattoo. Scott believes Rodriguez may now be “backpeddling” by saying the tattoo is for identification purposes.
North Carolina’s animal welfare statutes define animal cruelty to include “unjustifiable physical pain” and “suffering.”

Rodriguez has no regrets and noted he will tattoo his next dog/s. He also claims tattooing pets is not uncommon. While the website Petsclan.com features photos of several tattood pets, Mediaite was unable to find any other such evidence. Last year, The Week posted a piece entitled: “Tattoos… for your dog?” highlighting a new craze — except these were fake, airbrushed tattoos. As the article noted: “Not a real tattoo — imagine getting a dog to sit through a long session of ink-dipped needing.”
    Imagine, indeed.

Wow someone reported him to animal control? I know they tattoo show dogs I think people should just mind their own business. Not cruel IMO unnecessary yes but so are ear crops and those are done all the time. If I was the owner I wouldn't have posted that info online for all to see especially not in the USA.

This is stupid. Mind your own buisness people. His dog, His property. I cropped my dogs ears for years, though I don't anymore. Oh, I never used antesitic. It was done and over before the dog had a chance to feel it. Some of ya'll need to go to a pig farm and watch as they CUT the testicles of the little pigs in the middle of a pig pen, throw a little antiseptic on them and turn them loose. Or pull a full grown Stud horse down and hold him while cutting him, throwing anticeptic on his sack and turning him loose. Inhumane? BS, Its life on the farm. Same difference with a man raising these dogs. His dogs, His responsibility. To those who can't handle it, DON"T LOOK.

I agree SVK but people in the USA are crazy they love animals like they are people Especially dogs facebook is full of animal rights activists and crazy people who feel animals should be protected and treated like people. I think it's fucked up that people reported this guy but it's a double edge sword you put your business out there on facebook and you live in the USA you wave those rights away to privacy facebook is far from private. Messed up situation and just more ignorance I'm glad his dogs are ok and still with their owner.

Anyone who thinks that what this man did to his bully is cruel better be a vegetarian or else they are just being hypocrites. The practices inflicted on animals raised for the meat industry are far worse than just putting a little tatoo on a dog. Although I personally find it stupid it's definitely not cruel.

That particular tattoo was rather non intelligent but i see nothing wrong with tattooing your stock as a way to identify them if they are ever stolen

Although it wouldn't be my choice of tattoo it falls into the category of "his dog,his business" I actually believe there is nothing wrong with tattooing a dog for identification. Decorative tattoos are like ear cropping,a matter of what the owner wants.

i think that a decorative tattoo on a dog is plain ignorant sure it could serve the purpose of an id and decorative but it is alot easier to tattoo a number or name in the dogs ear or mouth

    Oh,I agree I wouldn't do it,but I'm pretty big on the "his dog,his business" mindset even if I think it looks retarded,(which I do,lol)

no doubt i do not care what folks do with their own stock as long as it doesn't effect the breed as a whole

the tattoo is a mess, looks like he took the opportunity to practice on the dog when it was sedated
don't care what he does with his animals, would guess he's made a mess of some peoples arms/tattoos also!
