I want to condition my Stafford - help a beginner out!

Allright, I will cut the food after this week. She weighs about 4-5lbs more more now than last fall. About the same tone, but more muscular. She has a good back, esp. shoulders, and front.

    2 reasons I've been sceptic bout food-cut:
    1. I want her to get the protein and fat (energy) to build and last, and not risk wear her muzzles down and...break her.
    2. She's a food maniac! Always hungry.

But yeah, I'm gonna reduce the food (after this week).

Question 1: When's the best feeding time? How should I feed her?

I work her every morning and feed her (dry food w/ water - wanna make sure she gets hydrated) half an hour after done working out. Then a second time in the afternoon and a third and last time some hour before sleep.

Question 2: Any idea bout how much food (%-wise) I should skip?

I'll be back with pics this weekend!

Most dog's will eat anything/everything in front of them...that's why there is a-lot of obese pet's....make-sure ya soak the dry well...the dog gets more nourishment when it is soaked right thru...weigh how much food your give her at the moment..then start cutting back on say a hand-full of food for the first week..and another the next week..after a few weeks ya will notice her weight comeing off as you increase her exercise..you will notice ya will get a good balance ..of food to exercise;etc;...i would feed once a day only..or if ya want ya can divide it in to 2 smaller meals..about 45 min's after training..there is a few good threads on food's and supplments on here....try adding a bit of fish/fish oils to her food...ps:don't be afraid to cut her food back..once the weight starts comeing off ya will have a very happy+active dog....keep us posted...good luck....b8b.......

It's tuesday so - we're just off the springpole! She managed 10 minutes - as usual. I need to get something new for her to grab a hold of, cus she doesnt seem very happy about this leather-thingy that is on it today...

I took a look at her today while she were at it and while I massaged her and... yeah, I think reducing the food is a good idea. I fattened (word?) her up for winter and all those exta pounds are not gone yet to a 100%... She was 12 kilos last fall, and now 15 kilos.

She eats about 3 decilitres a day, divided into 3. I think I'll just take one portion out, leaving her with a total of 2 decilitres a day...

Man, that's nothing! :D I know I used to feed my old male kuvasz 15 decilitres a day... Of course, he was quite a lot bigger tho... :p

Oh well, guess the dry-food is soaked, wet and ready now and 40 minutes has passed since SP, so... feeding time!

See you later - and thanks for all the input!

I only feed mine once a day if your exercising once a day then only feed once the 2nd meal and 3rd at the moment is just sitting inside the dog turning to extra body mass and more stools to pick up she is a adult now at 2 so show will utilise all she needs from one good meal snd empty the waste out ready for the next days work out I believe it's good for them to completely empty out and refill once the works done if u feed 2/3 times aday surly your dogs always got somthing digesting in there during work out with is bad for kidneys to

And if u really want her looking fit u can't really just skip all ecersice for a whole week that a bit cruel to the dog that's used to going out every day to just sat doing note for a week

I was always told u can't beat road work 6ft lead harness and a 10mile hike every day u both will look fit as a fiddle nothing eles just miles fast walk every day for 5 weeks one good meal they wouldn't be a once of fat on her

But easier said then done I know my dogs fat at the min lol

MG MAKES A POINT..FAKIO MAKE SURE SHE NOT FULL OF FOOD B-4 EXERCISE..AND THAT BE A GOOD START CUTTING OUT 1 MEAL..LETS SAY YA FEED HER IN THE MORN AT 9am(FIRST MEAL) YA LET HER REST AND DIGEST.YA MAY NOTICE SHE CRAPS OUT LAST NITE'S MEAL,SO AFTER FEW HOURS,BRING HER OUT DO A BIT OF WORK SHE SHOWS NO INTEREST,B-CAUSE IT'S POSS;THAT SHE STILL HAS MORN MEAL IN HER..SO IF YOU BREAK IT IN-TO 2 MEAL'S GIVE HER JUS A HANDFULL OF FOOD IN THE MORN...THEN AFTER A GOOD DAY'S WORK-OUT..YA GIVE HER A RUB DOWN +THEN PUT HER TO KENNEL WITH HER MAIN MEAL,SO SHE WILL HAVE A GOOD 12/R/MORE HOURS TO EXPEL HER MAIN MEAL WHILE YOU WERE A-SLEEP.SO BASICLY IF YA GIVE HANDFULL OF NUTS IN THE MORN TO TAKE THE EDGE OF HER SHE BE HAPPY ENOUGH TILL SHE GETS HER MAIN-MEAL ...DON'T KNOW HOW YOUR WORK HOURS ARE BUT YA CAN FIT IT AROUND YOUR-SELF...TRIAL+ERROR..G-LUCK

    Ps:ya will notice a big difference in a few weeks..one of mine is the same i have to take a-lot of winter fat of her...i've been lazy...get me-self moveing......but i think it's poss; that she still has food in her be-fore exercise that's why she' loseing interest..try changeing the rag to a old leather foot-ball ;etc;etc;

I think it's already posted on this forum but try searching for the Finkle Winkel keep.
It's an easy keep for a beginner to get your dog in shape.

    Hi!

Before I start every excercise I let her do no. 1 and 2. I would imagine it is much more comfortable for her to run when not having to uh.. take a shit all the time and having all that junk in her intenstens.

I woke up too early today... She's still sleepy, all curled up like a ball and looking at me like " I dare you to...(bring out the bike)"

Oh well, a short walk and a cigarette it'll be, then biking.

I'll check the Winkel keep out!

Thats a good start..ur dog is all-ready empty..i bet when she is looking at you, if you go for the lead, she be up like a rabbit, jumping to go out..she is just waiting for you../?/..to make the move..after a 2-week/r/3..she should be real active......if your working her hard for a few weeks ya should give her a day of rest.or just empty her out small bit of work...............

If you wake up in the morning,an your dog has all-ready went to no 1+2..she is empty..so you can start a work-out then...when she is finished ya feed her (30/r/40..mins later)...when she is lying there she is waiting for you to go for the lead and bike..which is a good time to start as she is empty no food in her...after a while she will be full of life..as the weeks go by,give her a day of rest or just lite work for one day a week...nice to see a few photo's in a few week's...
