    Hi all,
I have just read a short article about a dog called Brindle Devil (a staff I think) owned by willie deleaney.
Does anyone have any info on this dog and maybe a picture to go with it?

    Thanks in advance

The Great Ceaser had no pedigree and wasnt bred by Willie Delaney , neither was he the dog Satans Son and he wasnt a brother to the Great Rodger , the dog Satans Son (Brindle Devil/Brindle &Bonny) was a tall dark brindle dog that stood over eighteen inches and Willie felt he was to tall and sold him to Tom Byrne who was the son of Bertie Byrne who owned the great Wheaten Hacketstown Jack . So whatever pedigree appears with the dog its false , i remember asking Seamus McNutt about this many years ago and he rang Willie Delaney who confirmed it and told him he never bred or heard of the Great Ceaser

Reading the story the dog was bought at a market from a young boy selling the dog because he had to. Pedigree in back pocket as well i presume? i'm by no means questioning the dog, but its written all very romantic and dare i say with poetic licence. Must be the old cynic in me lol

"my dad let the chain go and Brindle Devil not only did he shake the German Shepard but locked hard on the side of his face and stayed that way for well over an hour"

Really? if so , its not really impressive attacking a cur bred dog. It don't make for a game dog does it ?

Anyway, i could pick holes in the story all day, as i said it sounds very romantic in deed.

This is a common problem with many of the Stafford stories, most of them are written by people that have a romantic notion of things. Most of these story writers have pretty limited practical experience, or perhaps they just feel more comfortable in the story-zone. Let’s face it, most of the doers went to the American dogs and left the talkers with the Staff´s.

I think that the brindle devil story tells about the era in a good way though, not many people where genuinely involved in the sport of matching dogs back then! They were naive about things to say the least. I once saw a tape of some old DRS Staffs of the 1980´s and some of the stuff that happened in that video really made me puzzled. Amongst other things they let the dogs grab each other while they had them on leads, and then chocked the dogs to get them to release their holds! And I mean chocked them until they passed out…
