Now I am totally confused, what do I feed them?

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by enigma72474, Oct 16, 2005.

  1. I have 2 pit bulls @ 9 months old, for the longest time I have been feeding them IAMS and thought this was ok. I recently heard from a friend that their is superior foods I should consider which were -- Innova, Canidae, Timberwolve, Chicken Soup, Healthwise, and Blue Buffalo, to name a few. At the same time I read this guys article http://home.att.net/~wdcusick/AmericanPitBullTerrier.html

and he says that their is not one commercial dog food he would feed an american pit bull, he also wants $100 for a supplement chart and recipe for my specific dogs, does this sound like a fair price? He also stated that "Native food supplies for this breed would have been the crops and meats of colonial Florida. These included yellow corn, soy meal, rice, venison, and fish"

I mean, will switching from IAMS to a different food really make a difference in my dogs or is my buddy trying to pull my leg?

Please help as I want the best for my dogs but not sure if paying a lot more money for a so called better food is the way to go.

almost all the foods you lidted are good quality foods. after thread after thread, most pit owners stand beside canadae 100%. for nutritional values and contents. and overall dog health. i was feeding natural choice,,but have switched to canadae and love the results. and my dog looks and acts healthier. plus you do not need to feed them near what you have to give them on all that other crap food. my dog eats about two cups a day. one in the am, and one in the afternoon. where she was getting nearly three before on natural choice.(also a good food). diamond is also a good food to consider. do a search on the topic. you'll see the stas and opinions of all. good luck

This guy is a rip off. Don't send him any of your well earned money. What he is talking about is RAW or BARF. You can find this information for free all over the internet. Where he gets the idea that "Native food supplies for this breed would have been the crops and meats of colonial Florida. These included yellow corn, soy meal, rice, venison, and fish" is beyond me. What does colonial Florida has to do with a dogs nutrition? Corn isn't even good for dogs. They don't have any or barely any nutritional value for a dog. It is used as a filler in low grade dog food. This guy is just trying to sell his opinion. I wouldn't listen to a word he says.
BARF or RAW is the way to go. Just look up the information on the internet. It is readily available for FREE. If you don't want to go that route, go with a good kibble that doesn't contain corn. There are plenty of threads on this forum to help you choose what you feel is best. Just do a search.

Oh come on, he at least told her to switch to a better kibble and then was educated enough to know which kibbles were good. I just wouldnt send him 100 bucks....that is a rip-off.

I wouldn't take your friends advise or send him any of your money wouldnt ask a feed store either. as long as you are feeding him a nice balanced dog food he will be just fine along with exercise.

The best dog food I ever used was Martin's K9 feed. Marty has been into working dogs for years and has a very informative website with lots of good articles. I don't know how his food stacks up vis your formula but I can say from experience it is very good stuff.

    here is the website:

How do I get the recipe for the barf? Does Anyone know? That's probably a stupid question!!!! But I have a lot of time, so I could prepare it if they liked it.

Here is a good explanation of the BARF diet, and this has tons of good info, along with proper food ratios ;) I know there are specific ''feeding recipes" people have somewhere on the net, and I can google for them if you like, but the BARF diet is not a hard-lined defined process. The great thing about it is you can substitute foods, switch things up a bit, and use some creativity as long as you follow the guidelines.
