Shaking & Trembling

Hey there,

I know this is mainly a APBT forum and this section is for help with this breed, but I have a SBT and I'm just looking for a bit of help.
I'm not quite sure what to make of this forum, some people seem friendly, others don't, but anyway, here goes.

My Staffy won't stop shaking, I got him when he was around 2 and now he's 4 and when we're out an about, he shakes and trembles and vibrate and it's embarrassing when people point it out. Luckily it's winter, so my "he's cold" excuse works for now, but it's getting really stupid.

He had anxiety problems before I got him but he was walked regularly etc etc and he's bold enough when going out, but when you stop in a public place, his hind end shakes and shivers and he leans on me or other people and it's just frankly, pathetic.

Never had issues like this with any other dogs I've had, but then I've raised them from a much younger age, this Staffy is the only one who's ever done this...and I'm getting comments as well, one of which is: "That's a bit pathetic, he's shaking and has no reason to." and yes, I agree it is pathetic.

He has no prey drive in terms of live animals and wasn't socialised with other dogs at an early age. But that's something different altogether.
But does anyone have any clues how to stop the shaking? He can play just fine and is confident enough with that...but he shaking is driving me crazy.

I don't tell him off for it though or anything, because I can't. I don't know how to give him a way out.
I know its anxiety, but over what?

why do you even reply to that


first of all i think you're better of with a professional then on a apbt board. anyway, don't know how to help but it seems to me that it irritates you allot, more then you feel sry for the dog.
what is your reaction when he starts shaking cause im sure he can feel you're disappointment/irritation and that aint making it any better.

I usually sigh and take a step back, because molly-coddling him (comforting, soothing), only seems to make it worse.
I've never been violent towards him when he does it, but at some points at home, if he just starts shaking madly for no reason, I put him in a different room.
I do feel sorry for him, but I'm also hitting a brick wall.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here, 6s, I'll phone up the behaviour guys when I get back from holiday.

dont know what this dog has been trough before you got him, but you aint have to be an expert to know this is making things worse. i think u need to let the embarrassment go to start with. only then you'll be able to ignore the shaking cause i personally feel any reaction to this shaking is a bad reaction. best to be positive towards him when he doesnt shake.

good luck at the "behavior guys" sound like you both need them

All I know is that he wasn't socialised and had had a few attack from other dogs.
Phoned them today and we should sorting something out soonish.

Dog is obviously not used to being out in public and has clearly never been properly socialized you have to keep socializing him take him as many places as you can reward him for good behavior and eventually the dog will grow more comfortable with you and being out. Getting mad or irritated is only going to make it worse the dog can't help it you can hire a behavior specialist if you are not comfortable working with the dog yourself. You need to have a great deal of patience with this animal if you can't provide that then maybe your home is not the right fit for the dog and you might look at rehoming the animal with someone who can work through this dogs issues.

Check him for Ataxia as it could happen in staffs!
Otherwise he can´t handle to stand still as he is urging to walk on could also be the case.

Hey guys, thank you for all of this and we have finally found the reason and strangely, it's what you guys are saying.
He was never truly socialised in any really busy situations and he's been getting so much better these last few days. He also loves to just keep on walking. He's become so much more relaxed but there's a long way to go but we're making a lot of progress
