Can A Cur Dog Be A Game Dog?

Hey folks, not sure i understand, and would appreciate some help.

You repeatedly read that dogfighting, or other activities test the level of gameness in a dog. You also read how dogfighting is used to determine how game a dog is. Quite often read the terms deep game, dead game sometimes see a dog being referred to as very game.

    My question to you is:

If all dogs are game to some degree, ie. they show various degrees of gameness, i.e various degrees of will to win, which is gaged by when or if they quit a fight,

and if a dog that quits a fight is called not game

THEN HOW CAN A DOG THAT QUITS A FIGHT HAVE SOME LEVEL OF GAMENESS AND BE GAME TO SOME EXTENT, WHEN HE IS CONSIDERED NOT TO BE GAME?

From the definition of a game dog, i.e one that will not quit no matter what must be endured, I would have thought that being game is a bit like being pregnant, you either are or you're not, no degrees, no levels, no in-betweens.

    What do you think?

  2. I disagree with that last statement. If a dog quits a minute into playing but showed aggressive behaviour towards the other dog, it is a rough cur. If it last longer (let us say, 45 minutes) it has some game (other people will say it is not game <personal view>). Other dogs will continue playing for much longer regardless of it winning or loosing (These are game to some degree). Others may be loosing and eventually die but never gave up (These are Dead Game).

There is no "kinda" , "sorta" , a "lil bit" , "maybe". A dog is either game or isnt game. Ever heard the saying "you cant walk and run at the same time"? Gameness seems to be a term that is thrown around way to much. Its one way or the other. Yes or NO. period.

That is a BS statement like most things in life, "gameness" is not a black and white thing! There is varying degrees of gameness as history has and continues to show us!

I know a man who had a very good dog. He sold this dog to a man who not long after the purchase took her and hunted her. A few minutes after the hunt this girl decided she didn't like it anymore, the guy was pretty upset about it and sold the dog to some people in the Phillipines. These people kept this dog for a year before they ever hunted the dog. After she had time to become familiar with the 3rd owners as she was the first, she won 2 or 3 (?) contest afterward for them just as she did the 1st owner. Now was she game or was she not, or just refuse to work for someone unfamiliar to her? Can anyone elaberate on this? :D

I think what we are getting at is there are degrees ONCE you become "GAME"
And amongst the game ones there are deffinately "classes"
    yes/no?

IMO, Once a dog has showed game, then you start the clock. There are an enormous amount of contributing factors to how a dog acts or performs from this point on. When training a dog why is so much care put into the preparation? To eliminate as many of these outside factors as possible. From exhaustion, to strength, to heat, to general health. The only way to truly test gameness is by placing the load of the test on the dog's heart. Now seeing one on a hunt in bad cold wet weather, going alone on a big nasty boar really puts a few gold stars next to their name in my eyes. Add injury to the mix & I'll damn near die for that animal!

I can only speak from a researched perspective, but every thing I've read from folks that claim to know the breed say there are several dimensions of gameness, which I think you can equate to degrees. The tests for those dimensions follow accordingly..........

Maybe. That's the story as it was told to me. I just shared it. Who knows. Sometimes truth is weirder than fiction.
