Attack dog training.

I know most people are probably going to flame me, but here I go.

I'm wondering at what age I should start my dog on attack training, and what would be the best commands to give him to help initiate the training. Now I'm not going to be making him attack everything he see's but I have more than enough beware of dog signs up so if one of these hoodlums happen to come into my yard trying to take what they shouldn't [As they do very often around here]. My dog will be there to stop their attempts.

Now this isn't for anything illegal just in my area I have issues with people stealing, and I do have a fenced in yard but that doesn't stop them from going up to my house, and stealing what ever the want.

I have 3 pups 6 weeks old now, so I won't be starting them on anything as of yet just would like to know ahead of time so when they get to that age I'll have my little Yard Guardian. :) As well I don't want random strangers being able to walk right into my yard unclasp my dog, and walk off with it. Thanks guy's.

there is nothing you need to do.....a bulldog was not meant to bite man...you dont want to force a dog to do something it was not genetically programed to do....part of the problem w/bulldogs is some owners try to go against this notion....Dog and animal aggression is natural not human....a good bulldog knows and doesnt need to be taught anything

In general bulldogs make bad watchdogs....I know of people who have had to buy a watch dog to look over the bulldogs and pups...They are too human friendly....that is why the bulldog is #1 statistically as far a stolen dogs go...

If you want a guard dog, get a doberman or shepherd or something of the sort. Dont use an APBT! Last thing we need is that on the news because even if someone went onto your property, the fact remains its a pit bull and the media LOVES bad pit bull stories.

@brindlexpitt Well excuse me for wanting my pit to keep watch over my yard because this city is over ran with thieves.

The reason why I posted was because I knew a guy who had a pit who guarded his yard. You couldn't get in the yard without him coming outside, and calling the dog back. I know shepherds make really good guard dogs but I figured I'd give it a try with my Pit. Anyways for those of you who didn't answer as a smart ass I thank you.

i dont have any attacked trained dogs but they do a pretty good job of letting me know when somethings not right. that took absolutely no training at all. theyve been around long enough to know when the routines getting screwed with

Take your silly ass to a protection demonstration and meet professional trainers in the sport or comercial Personal Protection. They will be able to guide you and let you know what breed would work the best for your application. You can't teach this stuff your self, you need a decoy and a professional to teach you in a class on how to bond with your dog and how to build a foundation. Ghetto dudes try to do this themselves without any professional and their dogs end up eating their baby or a family member. Please educate your self and don't wing it, or else you will add more attack news to the headlines.

I don't believe I ever typed I was going to "Wing It". I'm not into the whole let's just see how it goes. I prefer structure, and dedication to training. I've trained more than a handful of dogs in Obedience. Simple come here fetch sit stay roll over drop it etc etc etc. The list goes on, but training a dog to attack is much more. In that area I have no expertise. Which is why I asked here. I bond well with my dogs they listen to my voice to a T. But I wouldn't even begin to try and command them to attack. I'm just fearful of my things being stolen, and/or my pups being stolen because around here in I'm assuming what you would call a "Ghetto" there are some miscreants who would rather take than earn.

Now because I ask a question of how I would go about it doesn't mean I'm going to try it on my own. I'd of course consult with an expert or people who know what they are talking about. It's a dangerous matter the whole "attack" thing. I was merely looking for opinions. But please do keep sending your "silly ass" replies. ;)

If you have competed in Obedience like you claim, you would then know how much work it takes and someone telling you stuff on the net won't do you any good. If you are fearful that your things may get stolen get an alarm system or buy a gun. A dog can only do so much. I am not sure if you are some kind of breeder or what not worrying about the pups that are outside but you are simply using the wrong breed for the wrong job. These dogs are not territorial towards humans and acting agressively without provocation demands the dog to be put down. So basically you are asking the breed to act completely out of standard for your own use since you have too many "things' or "pups" that can be stolen. Maybe since you live in an area where you can get your dogs stolen you shouldn't breed dogs that can get stolen and just get an alarm system, instead of risking your dog and the breed from being in the spot light like always.

just listen to what people are advising you and stop acting the wise-guy

you best get a real guard dog, get it.. bred to guard
they've got all you're looking for and its much easier to accomplish.
besides that, apbt already have a bad name. imagine if someone tries to steal your laptop and the dog bites the thief. no 1 is going to care about your laptop or the man who got bitten, just the apbt striking again.

  14. I think you need one of these....
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fila_Brasileiro
    No training necissary

If your pit bulls are real pit bulls it would be a liability to have them running around all day in the yard unsupervised. 1) they will eventually kill each other 2) they may escape your yard and kill your neighbors yappy mut.

if you put them on a chain spot they may not be as effective at defending your yard since they are restrained.

A fila or other large guardian breed wont try to escape your yard and you dont need to train them to do what they were bred to do, which is guard.

why take a screwdriver to pound in a nail when you can get a hammer

I agree% Also when looking for a guardian breed but that's a whole other different brain hardware you have to deal with. The Fila theoretically should be extremely hateful of strangers, but I still believe you need to teach the dog how to out when biting and how to stop. I know someone on this board owns some good Filas he can answer this better than me, but from what I hear and read the real Fila is no joke and if you are not a member of the family they will go after you if they made up their mind because of their Orijenza. I also think that dealing with a hardcore guardian breed is totally different than dealing with a human friendly submissive apbt. I do not own an APBT but I have fostered a Presa Canario, Cane Corso and helped my brother raise his Hybrid American bulldog and they aren't little happy dogs that submit to you like the Bully breeds do, these guardian breeds do not like to be told what to do and they are extremely dominant. So if this guy thinks getting a bad ass dog and that will automatically listen to him, he has another set of problems coming.

I never said I "Competed" in Obedience training. Please re-read my earlier post. I only said I've trained my dogs which I've had more than a handful of in obedience. I love my Pit bulls, and wouldn't trade them for the world. I don't want any harm to befall them. I'm not breeding dogs though I have 3 pups, and one 3 year old male. I've been around Pits, and Shepherds all my life. I've seen Pits taught as guard dogs like Shepherds have been. My father trained Shepherds for Ft.Bragg Mp's, and when he got into Pit's I was about 5 yrs old, and I grew with them as he did and I watched him train them the same way. He would give his "attack" command and my neighbor Chris would run from the dog in the carpet suit, and the dog would "attack".

Bad publicity. I've heard that one many times. I put it this way, and this is just my opinion. If my dog is a bad dog because you can't waltz into my yard, and do as you please then my dog will stay a bad dog. See people want these friendly tail wagging dogs. Which I have no qualms about at all. None of my previous dogs have ever been human aggressive. But I don't see the harm in having a protective dog.

As well I work 8 hours a day. The people around here don't have an issue with kicking down your door and carrying your stereo TV xbox playstation etc out with them, and an alarm system? I have one. Does it work? Sure it does. But the cops come after your "things" are already long gone.

Basically, the point I'm making is training your Pit Bull to be a Guard dog shouldn't be a crime. In this state it isn't actually. If you run into my yard and my dog were to get bite you It;d be your own fault. Let the media come what can they honestly say? "Guy try's to break into mans home, and his Pit Bull stopped him. What a vicious dog." Get serious they can shove it. Can they take my dog? No. I have the proper signs up warning others of the danger. Even though at this time I do not have a dog which will attack. They are up just in case.

It seems to me the main reason you guy's are against it is because of the media. Which is a shame really. I don't believe you should stop going about how you would go about things because the media will explode about it. But that's just me. If you shoot a man because he broke in your house you're in the clear, but if your dog is being protective of it's territory it isn't? I'd fight that one 'til I was blue in the face.

Let's simplify this for you: A Hummer can go off roading and pretty much deal with any terrain. A Honda Civic cannot go off roading it wasn't built for that. Can you try to take your civic off roading? Sure you can, but you will have to repair the car from the damage. The APBT wasn't designed to guard, please read about the breed and educate your self. Just like they were bred for combat, they were also bred to be human friendly and this trait was selectively bred into the dogs for 100's of generations. Now because you the idea of wanting to rewire a dog for your benefit it doesn't mean it can be done and it is not worth it. WHy take 100 step backwards when you can find your objective with a dog designed for that type of work. First off you need to understand what type of behavior you want the dog to have and what action to take. You need to read, research, meet trainers, attend demonstrations. I guarantee you that after you do all this the last though in you mind would be to teach your APBT to attack whatever that means.

You state that you are gone 8 hours a day so this means your dog will be alone deffending the home, which means there is nobody to use this whole attack command you are trying to teach the dog. If people kick doors down where you live for a playstation, I would save some money and leave that neighborhood because that is very scary IMO.

I worded that wrongly. I just want the dog to guard the yard basically. If a stranger hops the fence bite him in the ass. I might just get a shepherd, and let it be the guard dog. Might suit me a bit better.

sorry but i dont believe in APBT man biters.. get a real guard dog, a security system, and a gun. its simple.
