it ain't the jenny that's hard on the dogs. 9/10 its the dumbass setting it up or working the dog on it. if you don't learn from someone that been successful building them & working dogs on them. you will set yourself up to fail. it's more then building off a blueprint & reading a keep.

Pfftt... let 'em watch. Maybe they'll learn a thing or two about proper animal husbandry. I'm going to enjoy my freedoms while I have them and fight like an banshee to keep them.

Old Goat is talking from experience, you should be caution if you do build a jenny. A jenny will work but you need to be watching the hog very close. As for the Canadians, their has been talk about banning the breed in your province, so try not to get to cocky.

There is ALWAYS talk of banning them in our province, every time an incident occurs. The reality is though that more cities have DROPPED their BSL here or reconsidered a non breed specific law than there are places enacting it. Until laws state otherwise, they can kiss my lily white you know what. :)

Well I never worked a dog on a catmill. But I will say this.....I see whare old goat is comming from when he says about the dog suddenly deciding he has to pee. I would always empty the dog out (or so I thought) before workin em. But when I would have em run on leash while I'm on bike, it would be like 20 minutes and hed decide to piss or shit again. Here's where the momentum comes in, I would always slam my brakes when he stops suddenly, but I wouldn't necessarily stop suddenly I would still skid about 3 or 4 feet. Draggin the dog a good foot behind me (4 ft lead.). Now that's me slammin on brakes on a bike. Imagine what the momentum of 30-40 lbs and 10 (or whatever) feet of steel can do to a 30-40 lbs dog?

On the flipside, I can dig where bens comming from. A seasoned dogman that knows what he's doin can potentially overcome this obstacle, say by making. It out of alluminum so it lighter? Whatever it may be, I would make sure the man building it knew what he was building and has had sucess working a dog on it himself.

I've seen one made for horses were they used a front wheel of a motorcycle, leaving the disc brake on the wheel. Burried the wire under the track and then sit there in a lawn chair with a handle bar in your hand. When the dog, or in this case a horse, stops you just hit the brakes. Seen it work and will probably make one myself in the future.

hi tension wire or a brace arm to the base should get rid of the need for the counter weight.make sure to post pics for us bro!lol good luck with the build.

  19. The blueprints I have seen are nothing like how Don said to build one so it's no surprise most people have problems with them. Gundu is right about the track, it is the most important part of the catmill and I have never seen one built the way Mayfield had his built. A dog should never have to stop and empty out while on a catmill. If it does it then you are not working him right since you should know exactly when and how much a dog will shit and piss while in keep.

The name for the contraption that is used to work horses is a "Jenny" which is named after the mare that was used to make the horses follow her. She was called a Jenny or Ginny. The correct name for the contraption used to work a dog is a catmill, given to it for the cat that was put into the cage to make the dog chase it.

No matter what the excersize your dog is doing, it should never go unattended. Besides, in keep you should be aware of everything a dog does at all times so there should be no reason for a dog to be unobserved at any time.

There should not be any reason to use a counterweight or drag a chain or anything at any time in a catmill. If you have to do that then you built it wrong.

Zoe I wouldn't listen to these stupid fascist yanks and their laws, build yourself a good catmill and watch your dogs become stronger, faster and have improved air. Everyone is a friggin' cop now a days...

I agree Gringo. Is it against the law to have a jenny in some places? As long as it isnt against the law build it. Just because a bunch of peta pricks want to claim its paraphernalia is no reason not to. Stand up to what you believe in. McDonalds hands out millions of straws a day. 2" thinwall Aluminum tubing/pipe and 1/8 " aircraft cable is light and easy on a dog when stopping.
