Trying to drop some pounds and needing some ideas on how to do it...

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by stacyjolley, Aug 21, 2011.

  1. I have a 2 year old, spayed female that packed on some weight since her surgery. i know many vets say that being spayed does not cause a dog to gain weight and i'm sure the operation itself is not the cause of her weight gain, but it seems like she started to put on the weight soon after being spayed. it was also winter time and neither of us were feeling up to the long walks we had taken during the spring and summer time so a lack of exercise is also partly to blame for her chubbiness. as of right now, she is probably 5 - 6 pounds over her ideal weight. she is very wide across her back and i cannot feel her ribs when i run my hand down her sides. i am concerned that this additional weight will eventually cause health problems for her so i am trying to correct the problem before it happens. i have cut out ALL table scraps (which she didn't get frequently anyway) and treats, except for stuff like watermelon and canteloupe, which she loves, and she only eats 2 measured cups of dry kibble daily. i have stepped up her exercise routine by increasing the amount of walks we take together and we have started going to the dog park several times a week where she runs her heart out for a good half hour to fourty five minutes each time. still, the weight doesn't seem to be dropping as quickly as i expected it too. i don't really trust the "weight management" formulas of the commercial dog foods. they seem to be geared more towards maintaining a dogs weight than reducing it. has anyone had good results with a particular brand of weight management dog food? how quickly should she be losing weight at her current food intake and exercise level? is there something else i should be doing?:tdogwalk2:

Don't bother with weight management foods just feed less of what you are feeding now, and lots of exercise.

i first i would say the dog parks not a safe place . 2 cups is alot of food . cut it to 1 cup 1 time a day and then walk the dog before she eats . then in 2-3 weeks if they're not loosing then cut to 1/2 cup and walk . sure they will want more , but only give it to them after they loose weight . 1 tablespoon of vinegar in the feed will help get things working to loose weight . after they get to loosing the weight stop the vinegar and give 1 cup of feed . 2 cups is to much . unless you have a 50 lbs dog in shape . or it starts getting cold . summer time dogs should eat less . a dog in shape is a happy dog . a fat dog is happy and lazy .

do a lot of research on health, diet, and and hit the streets(that means walk, not leave).
what does the dog weigh, how tall, ya got a pic? How often do you exercise the dog?
Doing what was said above will cut then you have to keep workin to keep it off and trim up.
