how long do the pups need to be on the mothers teats? i heard that if you remove them early from the mother her teats will go back to its normal shape. if they are left on too long the bitches teats will be extra large and the mamary glands will keep producing milk longer than normal. I believe pups should be on the moms teats for up to 8-10 weeks right? is there anyone who pulls the pups off earlier than this say arround 6weeks to ease the stess off the lactating bitchs teats. would like to know and also if the teats took back to its shape.. i dont want my bitch turning out like a old brood bitch with saggy teats lol.... help on this would be appreacitated....

I'd say it depends on the bitch. Work or exercise her to get her back in shape. Springpole helps.

I start weening at 3-5 weeks, the mother usally will start cutting them off.
If you got a big litter waiting 8-10 weeks is more stress and pulling on the mother's health then needed.

FROM ANOTHER POST:
Any good mother of puppies will do most of the work when it comes to caring for newborn pups up until the weaning stage so there is not a lot that you will need to do. Not only does nursing from the mother provide the puppies will all the nutrition they could possibly need, it also gives them antibodies to help prevent infections.

Under normal conditions where the puppies were born on time, safely and with no complications, weaning will occur naturally after around five to six weeks after they were born. As they grow and learn, the puppies will become more independent and spend more time away from their mother. The mother will also start to react negatively to the puppies' growing nails and teeth as these will make feeding uncomfortable for her.

However there are things that you can do as their owner in order to make the weaning process go more smoothly. Once they reach the age of about five weeks old, separate the mother and pups for a length of time and gradually increase this each day. In order to help the mother's milk supply slow down and eventually stop, it is often a good idea to slightly reduce the mother's food intake. If she is still producing milk once the weaning process is complete, then you should take her to the vets to ensure that there are no underlying problems.

As the puppies start to feed from their mother less and less, you should start to replace this liquid with some well balanced puppy food that is specially designed for eating during this time. Ask at your local pet store if you are not sure. Feed this to the puppies around three to five times a day. The whole weaning process should be successful after about one week

The pup I got now is already weanning right now at 3 weeks since the mother is cutting him off already and is drying up.And its loving the pup food. The small breeds needs 5-8 weeks.

if you want to dry the bitch up . start taking the pups from her at 5 weeks and let her go on her chain during the day . then put the pups with her back at night . at the end of 3 weeks the pups will eat mom's food and suck milk . 5 weeks they should be eating alot of puppy food . then on week 6 don't put mom back in with the pups . and don't feed her for the first day . the second day feed her half of what she usually eats . third day give her the normal feed without giving extra for her milk . she will dry up fast .

depends on the pups and the mother how hard they are on her and how good of shape the pups are in but i don't think it hurts to introduce some wet feed as young as 3 weeks

This is definitely based on the individual situation. I say most pups will eat hard food by the time they are about 3 weeks- 3.5 weeks. Most mothers I leave in with the pups until they are 6-8 weeks old, but I have had some litters where they were separated as early as 3-4 weeks because of other issues.

In my experience, the pups tend to do better is they have at least some access to the mom until 6 weeks at least :)
