Help with Raw

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by ohpitbulls, Jan 10, 2011.

  1. No need to grind the bones, in fact eating bones and such is beneficial to your dog - it makes them work different jaw muscles and actually "think" while they eat, rather than eating a pile of mush they have to hold down their food with their paws and figure out how to best crunch off the flesh and bone. It is mentally stimulating to them. It is a waste of perfectly good bones to grind them up...

heart kidney and gizzards are all good too. and like another post-er said raw green tripe about a teaspoon or so every other day is great too, make sure its green tripe though, not the white bleached shit at the grocery store.

could i just use bone scraps ?

  4. Only use pig /lamb bones neck bones ribs pigs feet ect.. great workout for them and keeps there teeth and gums in top shape also gives there stomach time to produce the acid it needs to digest there food as apposed to wolfing down a bowl a nuts in seconds and never weight bearing bones they could easily crack there teeth on them stay away from beef bones too hard also they shatter and can lodge inside them and cause a lot of damage find out who supplies your butcher and they should give them for free

It may not harm a dog to feed vegetables but if they were in the wild they would preferably eat meat. Just saying this in case veggies get expensive. Can someone tell me why you all feed them yogurt? Also if they were in the wild they would eat the organs from their kill everyday so I don't there is no limit organs unless you want to watch their cholestrol level.

Vegetables aren't expensive. Just get the miceowavable frozen bag. Yogurt is for digestion. The "in the wild" argument doesn't work because wolves don't eat everyday. If you want to be true to the wild you should allow your dog to gorge one day a week then allow only water for the rest of the week. And every two weeks fast for 7days.

  10. A dog in the wild will not go kill 10 animals and eat their organs only - they will kill an animal and eat the whole animal. In a whole animal about 10% of it is organ meat.

This is where the percentages come from, to mimic the percentages that a prey animal is made up of in terms of muscle meat, organ meat, and bones.

Saying not to put any limit on the amount of organs you feed and claiming that a dog can eat as much organs as it wants in the wild is just foolish. As I said above, no dog in the wild is going to run around killing animals all day and eat only the organs leaving behind the muscles and bones.

The reason behind yogurt has already been covered - it is good for the gut and contains live enzymes which are beneficial to the gut. It is not needed, but it is helpful.

Don't stress over the weight of the quarters well at least I don't. I have been simply eye balling her feed since I began feeding her raw diet. I just make sure it's balanced like meat, bone, organs and the supplements I have chosen to add in. Depending on whether we are highly active, conditioning, or not is how I base her daily amount of feed. By balance also you want to try and provide different varieties of meats as best as you can like chicken, turkey, lamb, beef, buffalo, and salmon is what I usually have. Since you are just going to begin though I've read (not sure how valid this is but I myself followed it) it's best to stick with one type of meat for a few weeks and then you can gradually begin to add others.

One leg qt a day is all u need!!...I feed three times a day!...1cup of wellness core/evo in the morning, 1 leg qt for lunch, dinner is raw, fruits, veggies, fish oil, carbs 3 time a week!.....it's not the best diet but it's a good diet!...I'm still learning myself!!.

Feed three times a day ?! Is your dog ever empty enough to walk ?! Raw veggies will just pass through your dog with little to no nutritional value. Par cook veggies and eggs and if possible blitz together, the digestion starts right there helping the dogs system to break down and absorb the goodness. I add the above mixture to my minced chicken wings and offal with salmon oil and multiple vit. Straight forward, use my eye as a gauge , no weighing. With regards veggies, throw the dog a raw piece of carrot, keep an eye on his toilet habit, give it 24 hrs and I'm sure you will see the piece of carrot come out much like it went in! Point in hand proven, par cook the veggies so they can be absorbed and utilized by the dogs body and not just pass through as waste.

3 times a day is an awful lot...even if it is smaller meals the dog never gets a chance to be empty....when a dog exercises or plays he uses every fiber of his being....he needs to be empty or at least mostly empty for that....if the total amount of three meals is the amount he needs i would feed that amount in two meals....give him the chance to digest and empty before he exerts himself....i feed...
    1 leg quarter
1 heaping spoon of veggies(thru a juicer.i drink the juice.they get the pulp
1 heaping spoon of plain yogurt
    1 heaping spoon of lard
1 cup of twice cooked brown rice
wheat germ oil every other day
    1/2 multivitamin every other day
1 heaping spoon of tripe when i have it...
a red meat/organ once or twice a week if it is way cheap/reduced...
this is once per day unless we are working really hard....the dogs are thin, but fit...and if i run them in the evenings then i know they are empty or a dump away from being empty....
in the winter time i may add some cooked noodles/extra rice as a filler moreso to offset those cold nights than to provide any extra nutritional value...best of luck...US1

If you feed 3 times a day you can just work before the second meal after emptying the dog out. If this is just a daily workout then just feed, work, feed shortly after then feed again.

Damn!!...I thought I wasn't feeding enough!!...If u really look at that diet its not much at all!!....1 chicken leg qt at lunch is not a meal at all, more like a treat!!...lol...I try and feed 2% of there body weight for the whole day and that diet is just that, just over three meals!...I don't give my dog whole carrots, I cut them up and have never seen a piece of carrot in there stool....my dogs stool comes out perfect!!..but I am still learning!....so wats the best way to add weight??...the diet I use now has them thin but in shape and in good health but I do want to put a couple more pounds on them...if I add lard to the diet will this help??...I kno they say just feed more but mines will not gain!!..
