I've been researching Raw diets for a couple weeks now and still researching the pros/cons.

If I don't have a local butcher to purchase meat/chicken etc etc from and have to purchase raw food from say Costco, Walmart, or the grocery store..if these chickens/cows were raised on corn and pumped full of steroids/hormones would this be defeating the purpose of a raw diet for a dog? In turn wouldn't it be just transferring whatever chemical/s pumped into these slaughtered animals to the dog/s by way of the raw meat? My point is I don't want to defeat the purpose of going raw if it's really not much better chemically speaking than a high quality kibble.

I'm not a food expert nor against raw feeding but this is something that's puzzling to me. Maybe I still need to do more research also. Just looking for some thoughts and opinions.

    Thx..

Try finding a local farmer or rancher. More times than not you can get scraps, hearts, and the cuts you want from these places somewhat inexpensively. If you are living off the Costco, Walmart stuff why would it hurt your dog? There are books out there to help you find places to purchase this stuff at a decent price, ie The Pitbull Bible--JMO

the issue is the nutrients in the dry food...the dry food starts out just like the meat in the stores but is heated into kibble...the heating process destroys the majority of the nutrients....feeding raw allows the dog to get those nutrients otherwise baked out....the steroids involved in the meats we eat are another issue...not necessarily bad for the dogs....but if you went raw and organic that would be ideal...but way expensive in comparison to just plain raw....US1

It would be defeating the purpose but places like Costco do sell organic and also do sell pretty good quality meat that is cheap and hormone and pesticide free.

There are good quality grain free kibbles that use excellent quality meat and slow cook it.

It`s not just the steroids that are in poor quality meat it`s the fact that the animal wasn`t fed good quality food so it is impossible for the meat to have many nutrients. Also anything that the animal was given is stored in the fat, all drugs etc. farmers are paid out on the weight of the animal not it`s fat free mass, a trick that many do is put wood chips, plastic chips and even concrete dust into the feed all of which are stored and add a lot to the animals weight.

IMO the order of quality would be
    Top quality meat
    Top quality kibble
    Lesser quality meat
    Lesser quality kibble
Cheap nasty meat and cheap nasty kibble about the same with maybe the meat just about coming out on top because a lot of cheap kibble contain very little or even no meat.

Best of all; breeding and raising all your animals to feed to your dogs, then you'll know exactly what is going into your dogs... And your own body as well...

I'm not set up like this yet..but will be in the future...I am going to check out some local farmers to get some ideas/prices etc etc..

  10. Craigslist always has free rabbits and guinea pigs. Build a couple of hutches and get a few male and female pairs and you're set. Quiet, breed fast, easy to feed and raise.

At least that's what I'm doing this summer. Of course I'll be eating them too.

its all human grade meat. your dog will be fine. if you have questions you can contact the company who handles the meat and they can answer questions you may have but imo buying "organic" is just a waste of money

I was thinking the same thing too after looking at price comparisons...thanks Naustroms.

I just started to feed raw. Both my dogs had been on TOTW.

The reason being that my male has skin allergy's and I wanted to see if this would help get him off prednisone.

I have deer meat Elk and a couple pigs in the freezer.I know its fresh and hormone free.I killed them my self.I am trying to do the 80/10/10 ratio.I have to buy beef organs for the mix.

what confuses the hell out of me is that there are so many different diets out there and every body says theres is the best. When I go to places that sell raw usually when i tell them what i`m feeding they tell me my dogs need supplements or vitamins and vegetable mixes added to there food.my dogs tried and don`t like the taste of that stuff.even if i cut the meat up into tiny pieces to mix the the stuff in.i thought that defeated the purpose of having to chew there meat.

I almost feel like i should just stay with the kibble and have a balanced diet. And forget about the raw all together.

    1 leg quarter
    2 half boiled eggs
1 cup of brown rice (bolied/cooled/boiled the 2nd time)
    one half daily vitamin.
    mounded tablespoon of lard
    two tablespoon od greens (collards/turnip)

the meats change with prices.. i feed a lot of chicken backs and chicken necks...some days there is no mix just meats....it is not the ideal or perfectly made raw diet but it is cheaper and better than kibble...but a lot more work....US1

this is what i feed...for the most part....the greens mix well with any mixture so the dogs will eat it...sometimes it takes the time to send it thru a blender first so it will mix better....i don't feed this everyday...somedays it is straight meat...some days i will make the mix and add a can of jack mackeral or some raw beef tripe to cover the greens....it is definately a better way to feed, it is actually cheaper but it is much more time consuming...US1
