Not all bulldogs had long hair. Even the bulldogs with long hair, the hairs aren't exceptionally long. It is theorized that the long hair was due to the colder climate, as most of the old pics of bulldogs with long hair were from colder regions and they were kept outside. You know dogs, even our apbt, in colder climates that are kept outside year round in the snow will grow slightly longer hair and the coat would feel a bit smoother. This is also seen in other mammalian species, like the lion. The African Lions that are in the Russian zoos have developed thicker and fuller manes similar towards the critically endangered Barbary lions, which made scientists believe that the Barbary Lions are more abundant than they had thought. However, upon analyzing DNA samples, they found the animals weren't Barbaries.
