Yes of course, but youre talking decades and decades ago, during the formation of the breed.

The breed now has defined type and over 30-35# renders the breed something it is Not and was never intended for.

    I dont understand your point.
The Pat is, was and wil always be an earth dog, unless and until its fanciers decide differently.

Breeding 35# dogs would likely be for purposes other than what it was originally designed for.

    The Patterdale Terrier

The Patterdale Terrier is a tough, active terrier and should give a compact, well balanced image. Height should be between 10" to 13" measured at the shoulders.

Weight should be proportionate, presenting neither a "weedy" or "clunky" image.
(Note: 35# dogs dont fit the bill here...)

I don't like standards, and the PTCA is only a club.
My adult Patterdale Terriers are PTCA registered, but that doesn't matter for me.
My male has 15 inches in shoulder and weight 30 lbs. That is too big for fox, but an earth dog is not only for fox.

    Yes they are.

    From the FCI 103:

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: After the First World War a group of active hunters separated from the numerically strong Fox Terrier Club. It was their aim to create a breed, the sole purpose of which would be hunting performance. The experienced hunters and cynologists Rudolf Frieß, Walter Zangenberg and Carl Erich Grünewald decided to select a black and tan hunting dog in particular suitable for the hunt under the ground.

When the lack of standard deviates from its working ability, youll wish you had a standard.

The breed originators in Germany, you can be sure, had a standard and were fanatical about it, just as they were with all of their breeds, both working and sporting/versatile hunters.

It is the lack of standard bred by populaces in other parts of the world, including America, that is destroying these once fine breeds, from the German Shepherd, to the working Doberman, Boxer, to the Weimaraner and soon enough and with enough time, the Jagd.

You best believe there is a reason for a standard and a breedwarden and breed club that adhere TO it.

Let me rephrase....The Breed (Jagd) is NOT an earth dog, per se.

Jagds were Bred to be longer legged, shorter backed and larger than many other earth dogs, including the teckels/dachshunds and earth terriers.
Their hindquarter angulation in comparison to other terriers etc leave something to be desired, from a pure earth dog standpoint ie Cow hocked most.

Jagds can and do certainly go to ground, but most earth dogs, especially in America, need to be 14" to enter woodchuck/rabbit/fox holes-ie primary quarry.
Bigger than 16" and there isnt much earth game left to hunt!

This leaves almost all Jagds out of this category, most Jagds are 14" and larger, standard calls for up to 15-16 inches.
Part of the design of the Jagd was not for just an earth dog, but a versatile dog that could hunt and bay boars, trail wounded boar and roe deer, trail hare and fetch feathered game. That is their primary purpose in Europe and they are an extremley popular terrier/hunting dog.

Now we're back to a STANDARD, and for those that say there shouldnt be one, the breed is soon rendered useless for the work it was chosen and designed for.

Jagds can go into badger holes, but fox holes wouldnt be possible once they outgrow their standard size.

Additionally most Jagds are cow hocked, which defies a true earth dog build/structure as it relates to conformation.
The Jagd is alot of things (versatile) and can do alot of things, provided its bred to standard, both performance and conformation (including size).

If you breed for working you don't need a standard.
The standard dicate you much more than the size of the dog.
It dicates you the colour, ears, tail, head, legs.... .
It dicates a lot of things that doesn't matter for working, ....and that is what I don't like.

Could someone answer a question for me?

I'm highly interested in all breeds of working terriers (I own some working Jack Russells myself) and have noticed that the Jagd terrier's name is also spelled "Jagdt" occasionally. Why is this? Is it incorrect? Does it vary in different countries?

I'd just really like to know.

    It's a German breed.
We call it in Germany "Deutscher Jagdterrier"

There are many lines in jagds, i talk so much with a friend of mine who lives in spain, and you can find digg bred, boar bred, kamikazee bred, or multipurpose bred dogs, they don't name it like that but they tell you what they breed, croatian tend to breed kamikazeez, fearless dogs that instead of bolting foxes tehy kill them inside and also fight badgers and they get very hurt so you can hunt less, but they are the best to manage wild cats, coons, and that stuff... their chest is small, as well as the den bred ones, and boar ones tend to be bigger and more a multi purpose dog being used also for retrieving, pointing, etc... Patt's for me are the best of the best ground dogs around, also for small game like squirrels, rats, possum, and small coons my favorite terrier, second place border terrier, third jrt small legs, 4 ground bred jagd, 5 bedlington.... but again talking about jagds the multipurpose one, is a much more complete hunting dogs than all the others.... i had an awesome wired fox terrier he was a top dog, retrieved, huned in ground, water retriever, put him lot of times in pecari, possum nightmare, he was stolen in a hunting trip a by a hunting "mate" m"!·$%fu"·$%ker:::!!! [IMG] there he is... still miss him

"Jagd" without "t" is correct. it doesn't vary, some people just have difficulties with their spelling ;)

    "jagd" is pronounced like this: j = y; a = u (like in nut ;) ); g = k. well, and d = d :D. so it's a "yukd"-terrier *lol*
