I'm thinking of getting a 1911 and wanted to know if anyone owned one, and what brands do you recommend? I was looking at a Rock Island Armory (I know the cheapest one).

Depends on what size you want. I have 2 kimber TLE Custom 2's and they perform nice. Do you want rail mounts, bore lasers, changeable barrels to smaller or bigger size calibers? Everything has a part in choosing a gun. Kimber, Torus, Colt, S&M, Springfield, Kel-Tec. Look for something compact, lite and lots of accessories EX: Glock, Springfield, S&M. There are better guns than a 1911. Same knock down power but better recoil and more options to choose from. I personally recommend the new Springfield XD 40 ACP. Not as much power as a 45 but faster with more control.

I guess it depends how you measure a firearm. You can't show me a glock that has been in use for damn near 100 years n still firing flawlessly. People like the 1911 because you can have one for 50 yrs and still be good. You can purchase one military issue from the war 70 years ago and still be good and it looks virtually the same as it did back then. People like shit like that, good ol war gun. Really the only advantage I feel like I have with a glock and a springfield Xd is that they are very forgiving as far as care and cleaning. You really don't have to take good care of them for them to work good for a good period of time... probably not 100 years though.

If you're looking at RIA's, its not the cheapest but its definitely the best for the price.

I agree with Venom. I'm not a fan of Glock, there ugly as sin...lol I do think they produce quality guns. I've never stress tested a gun (cost to much) but Glock did a stress test on there guns and that's what gave them the name. The 1911 used to be a gun of choice for police and military. Nothing has changed with the look, design or dependability. They have been around for ever and will continue to be around forever. I love my guns and I have thought about getting a Kimber CDP 1911 but the Magnum Research AE 50 is calling me...lol

What size barrel is that? It looks short but it could just be the picture. Still a really nice looking gun. I really like the look of classy guns.

Rock Island should be ok,it's cheap enough you can build it something a little nicer later on.A Springfield or Kimber would be nice too.On the more expensive side I'd love to get one from Wilson Combat. It's been a while since I've had a 1911,but I do like them.

I like a good 1911 but honestly I feel as well protected by a $500 Glock as I do a $1000 1911.To me my carry gun is a tool and I don't care if it had a engraving of Rosie O'Donnel's face(now that would be ugly, lol) as long as it put a hole in the bad guy reliably.

Time will tell if they will hold up 100 years but I see no reason they wouldn't.There's Glock's that get thousands and thousands of rounds sent down the pipe every year and they're holding up fine.As far as the advantages go,I've had better overall reliabilty with the Glock, the 1911 with a little work were fine but you can have a reliable Glock for $500 or get a 1911 for quite a bit more and have to work on it to have it as reliable as the less expensive Glock.Ammo capacity goes to Glock.Price goes to Glock. The 1911 is a thinner gun which is nice.I also like a good 1911 trigger. The 1911 can be put in a waistband or hip pocket where a Glock must have a holster, but I carry all my carry guns in a holster anyway so that really isn't an issue,at least with me.They both have their strong points, and I like both guns but my favorite carry gun is a Glock 27.Simple,reliable,easily conceiled and will put holes in the target all day long.
