Shogun was barking a lot the other night, more than normal but not enough to make you think something was going on.

4 a.m. in the deep northern bush is not a friendly place.

Hubby found him pretty banged up with 2 dead Coyote's in his chain spot. He must have been telling them off, but it went quiet and we thought he had gone back inside his dog house. Hubby says they were about 45 lbs each. He weighs 59 lbs CW.

He seems to be in good spirits but they certainly did a number on him. His head is wrecked and his one front and one back leg is damaged plus some damage on his backside.

On a lighter note....does that make him a 2x OTC LMAO

That's On the Chain not Off the Chain LOL

I hope he recovers well and soon, we were planning on breeding him to our Sugar Cane and she JUST came into heat. We have faith in the old guy (8).

    Just needed to vent, thanks

I hate coyotes. I lost a little chinaman bitch when she was 28 months to them. they left the bigger dog we had alone he was round 55-60lbsa and went right after the little 28 lb bitch. Glad yours made it hope everything goes ok.

    Thanks Bullyson. Welcome back :D

Shogun is definately a keeper. My biggest concern was shock setting in but he seems to be doing well considering.

Sure makes me wish we had him on camera when this went down. With the mess that was left it's hard to tell if it was only the two or if those were the only two he could get a hold of.

I knew it was a smart move to put him on the far side of the younger ones "just in case". If this had happened to any of the others it would probably have been the end of them.

Will probably take a tour of the bush tomorrow to look for any signs of others. Time to talk about putting up a fence of some sort.

I also need to take some pics of him and the Coyotes just in case. He is going to have some scarring that will be hard to explain otherwise.

glad he is ok, hope he makes a healthy recovery! I bet there were more than 2 just bc i dont see a coyote going 1-1 with a dog of his size. And if you do get the pics for evidence im sure everyone on GD would like to see... that is if you dont mind sharing :D

What a dog! Glad he took care of those pests, I know several people who've lost pet dogs to them.
(By the way, if you aren't going to do anything with the yotes, I'll buy them if you can ship 'em frozen... I do taxidermy lol. If the pelts aren't too torn up [and if they haven't started rotting])

but not to get too off topic...

Wonder if your female coming in heat is the reason they came around? Only thing worse than a coyote around here is a coy dog.

I was thinking about that female in heat to...

could have attracted them, but then again.. I would imagine those yotes turning on each other to instead of on a chained dog...

good dog ya got there ;)
isn't coyote hunting legal where you live?
if he enjoys it it could be a great workout for him! ;)

good boy Shogun! hope he has a quick recovery

My friend lives close to me (out in the woods) and he has two American Bulldogs he has to keep pests off his property and hog hunts with and they have free run of his 6 acres and theres been quite a few times hes foud torn up coyote carcasses laying aroud the property. His Am. Bulldogs look like 75 pound deformed pit dogs due to all the scars lol. But they are good at their job.

The hubby dragged the carcasses way out beyond and says he's not going to trek out there again just for pics :( It's not very often a meat source will last to long around here. He also didn't want the wildlife to learn there was a free meal anywhere near where we yard our dogs.

Had a lady down the road whose horse died, had it dragged up the pipeline and apparently it didn't last very long. It was winter and the wildlife sure appreciated the free meal.

Have another neighbor that has a few muttlies that run free. Her one female was just caught locked up with another neighbors male yesterday. This will be the third pregnancy in as many heats if it takes.

Lots of meat eaters where we live. Wolves, Coyotes, Cougars, Lynx, Bob Cats, Bears etc. That's why we put the big guy at the back of the yard. Good first defense line as has now been proven.

We are getting pics of Shogun but I'm not sure if the mods would allow them to be posted here? He's eating and drinking fine, just does not want to move around to much. He got a treat of a steak dinner last night and had chicken for breakfast. We've also got him on antibiotics and anti-inflamatories.

My husband took some pics on my phone as I was typing this but they don't show to well. I think I'll try and borrow my friends camera as it takes good clear pics.

Yes that is wild..I live in a large coyote populated area, and they avoid our yard like the plague. They must be pretty hungry out there.

  19. DryCreek

    DryCreek CH Dog

On May 9th we had 5 or more inches of snow fall, now it's so dry we have a fire ban on. They might be a little on the hungry side but they certainly picked the wrong dog to try for.

Shogun can be a sneak. He will sit back with an extra 4 ft of chain length loose behind him and wait for something to come into reach and wham. Hubby took our girl in heat up for a little preview and he was VERY interested even as sore as he was.

Sugar Cane, on the other hand, was not very lady like. LOL

He improves a little every day and as of right now there are no signs of infection. We will keep him on the antibiotics for a few more days but will have to take him off so as not to risk his sperm count/motility for the breeding.

I have a pic or two of him generally that I will post after the mods approve them.

I believe that pics of him as he is right now goes against board policy?
