Game Bred Stock as Family Protection.

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Lakewood Dogger, Mar 10, 2010.

  1. Time for some stories about how our great breed can protect the ones that they love.

Many years back an old timer had a dog down from Corvino breeding. The dog was brindle and 55 pounds. He was going to always be a house dog because the old timer was away on business and his family included 2 small children. The pup was always the boss.

He would grow up to be a wonderful speciman. The kids where his life. He would roam the house and sleep in the hallway in between the kids room. He would wait by the door everyday when it was time for the kids to come home from school. He would always be the outfielder when it came time to play ball in the yard.

As far as a watch dog, he was without equal. He was always very sharp when it came to situations. He would go nose to nose with the TV when animals would make noise. He would be able to run down squirrels in the back yard with a specific command. His master always said that if 6 people broke into the home the dog would get at least 4. That would give him the time to get the 45. And, he was a master marksman in the service.

I think a game bred dog is as good as any other breed in being an alert dog, I think they will posture against an intruder, even strike....but I think the actual aggressing on a human does not come natural to them due to their breeding...not to say they won't.....the naturals at PPD type work are the GSDs, Mallys, Dobes, Rotts.....

APBTs are as good of an alert dog as any other....they make terrible PPDs IMO

my dogs would get scared shitless of an intruder lol
if you train them for this theyd be the besta t it though

  4. I have had many that were not worth there salt as a PPD. THose mainly that where raised on a chain and used for what they where intended to do. The story that I posted is a true tale. The dog was a 55 pound monster. He wasn't human agressive at all. He wouldnot let anyone in his home though. Unless, the family showed him it was ok.

Here is what I'm talking about. He would be in the car. You could walk up and bang on the window with his master in plain site and the dog would lay on his back and maybe stand up. Now, the master walks away and you tried to go within 5 feet of that car. The dog was slaming his head against the window with his money makers in full view.

I don't look at this as being human aggresive. I look at this as being a family member protecting his property.

Actually in the Protection Sports they do just as well or better than their Guardian competitors at the "non-bite" work, and I don't mean taking the bite or outing...I mean the PB breeds seem to be softer on the bite in general than their Guardian competitors....this makes sense to me. The GSD or Mal are bred to the protection behavior, PBs are bred to task...I believe when the PB takes the sleeve the dog is doing what the handler asks, when a Mally takes the sleeve...well that is "where he lives"...just like when a PB dog faces off with another....

I would not expect a Game Bred PB to be as effective as a Guardian at aggressing humans...for obvious reasons

I agree...I am just saying monster or not...to actually aggress a human even if protecting his family I would not expect to be natural to him, I would expect the opposite

When you are in danger, its his turn to see if you are as game as you expect him to be.

  8. I'm not saying what you said is wrong. WHat I'm giving is a factual statement. As we know, there are specimens in the breed that completely go against the norm. This dog was one of them. He will be missed.

And I believe you...I still think this dog fought against his breeding to do what he did...especially being Game Bred JMO

  11. Again, I'm not saying your wrong. He was brought up in a loving enviroment and he more then paid his due. He also showed later in life what he was bred for. It was a good thing that he was there or a child would have been killed. RIP Duff. You will never be forgotten..

yeup my girl is protective of me for sure, I recall one time when we were walking and these teen boys were trying to start something amongst themselves but they were only a few feet away for anyone to realize something is wrong in that picture and two of them started running our direction and as soon as they had came maybe two steps away zoey just went in front of me, froze and barked at them. There have been a couple of other incidents where she became alert and protective and they always occurred when I felt some tension or fear myself and she may feel that who knows? all I know is I would protect my dog as much as she protects me ;) I never trained her or encouraged her to be aggressive towards humans and she isn't unless you threaten one of us.

i get the story bro theres some misconception here. 1st thing 1st the dog original purpose is to protect the master so us breeders are actually trying to undo what was done thousands of years ago. we didnt create the wheel guys. its there natural instinct to protect us. our dogs just tend to over do it so its best that we kind of breed away from that.

  18. Duff was the man. That is all I'm saying. If you don't like the story, please post your own..

I don't have any real stories about a protection bulldog, but i have had house dogs that were protective. This is usually them being territorial though, most dogs do this of all breeds. I got a little staff/amstaff cross and she will raise hell in the house when someone comes over and or comes in, but i've gotten into actual fights in the house with family members and strangers that were friends of my bro or somethin lol and she tucked tail and headed for her crate! Had a bulldog that was a house dog too, he would just watch lol

If I want a personal protection dog ima get a breed that has been designed for that kind of work, but bulldogs are smart animals and can tell the difference between friend and foe in the home.
