    legal ownership & neutering.

I have a 8 month old pup. I have had him since he was 3 weeks old. He is a sporting dog and I do not want to neuter him, although he is not papered and I did not know his parents. But honestly I could couldn't care less about him not being registered; he works hard, he is a good dog, and I'm not going to breed him. However, my parents don't care about any of this. They want him to be neutered, and at first I went along with it (I bailed out of his snip appointment the day before back when he was 4 months). I thought "Sure, he is just a pet and that is all I need". But like I said, he is turning out to be so much more, and I have always had the mindset that working/sporting dogs don't need to be altered. They are getting pissed, saying how I am so gung-ho about spay & neuter for everyone else but I won't get my dog fixed. Which is true; everyone in my family has lazy pet dogs and I advocate having them fixed. I have two spay appointments for my kitten and Shih-Tzu pending as we speak! So they can't say I am against spay & neuter now, because I'm still getting my other pets done, I just don't want my competition dog neutered! And I also told them that I had planned for my next dog to be ADBA registered anyway, and I wasn't going to neuter that one. They just don't care. Well, to my main point:

I am 18 years old, and obviously still live at my parent's house. However, everything my pup has is in his name. His first vet visit was paid by me, but it's filed under my parents name! Can I change that? His vaccinations were done at a clinic, but his paperwork is in my name. His rabies is in my name. His microchip is in my name. I'm getting his license this week and it will be in my name. I even had his nails clipped at Petsmart and it is in my name. Everything this dog has was paid for by me, including the dog food. Lately my antagonizing sister has been throwing in my face "Mom is going to make an appointment for Benny to be neutered and she isn't going to tell you". With everything in my name, could my family really do this? I told my mom point blank all hell would break loose if they touched my dog, but I'm not sure they even care what I have to say.

Their house, their rules; unless you have a lease and are paying rent.

See, that is what I am worried about. The vet offices in this area don't even require proof of ownership when if you bring animals in to be spayed/neutered.

Be a Man (or Woman) and get the dog fixed. You already stated that he is not papered an you don't know who the parents are, and you have no intention of breeding. Are you showing him? If you are, Where are you showing an unpapered dog, fun shows? You should lead by example and get him fixed.

What makes him a working dog? What does he work hard at?

And being 18 is nothing! Its just a number, until you are totally on your own and pay your own rent and all bills, you should still abide by their rules. Period.

I bet they still claim you on their taxes.

no need not to neuter a dog that will not be shown ( no reg=fun shows only, and balls are not required) or bred as you know not of the dogs ancestry

Get him fixed, best thing you could do for him especially since you don't know the parents/ lineage or anything. theres tons of these dogs in shelters that get put to slepp everyday because somebody just didn't wanna do it. get him fixed.

Actually, fixing a dog can make them a BETTER working dog since they're not distracted by a sex drive. All my guard dogs are fixed. The only reason to keep a dog intact is to get a show title or to breed it.

Definitely get him neutered. A lot of working dog folks that have altered dogs wait until they're between 18-24 months, though, so they can get their full muscle development. I personally won't alter a dog prior to that either.
