My puppy is currently on SD and she has bad breathe and gas.
I know this food is low rated but we had to get her off kibbles n' Sh!tz because of her bad sensitive stomach. the thing is I am also conditioning her and training her for weight pulling so I am looking for a good type of dog food. I seen Canidae has a 44lbs and it is in the price range. and it seems to have good ingrediants

is this a bad quality dog food? or is this pretty good?

Food like Canidae, Blue Buffalo, Innova etc are all better than SD IMO.

If the dog has bad breath and gas and is otherwise healthy adding some proboptis or a spoon of yogurt in the food is also helpful.

Innova doesn't have a 44lb bag, we go through dog food every two weeks to every month depends on the size. 44lb lasts about 3 and a half to 4 weeks. Wellness is also a food I was looking at but canidae had a high rating and is in the price range and it has a 44lb bag..wish I could find a bigger pound of high quality food. if it is expensive and large bagged we would go for that since it would last longer. we just cant run out and get a 60$ 25lb or 30lb bag of food, it wont last so in otherwords it is a waste of money.......in my mans eyes. I want quality where he wants budget. I said, If we get them a better brand they will be happier and their coats shiny, no gas, they will be very healthy doggers. I am slowly talking him into a higher quality food it just takes awhile for him to cave.
    BUT
If I don't change the dogs diet I will add plain yogurt but also....They have corn meal and meat by-products in sd which i don't like giving my pits so can I even throw in a raw egg for extra protien? any kind of meats I can toss in there to make sience diet better for them?

Try Kirlkland, Nutra Nugget, they are just as good as canidae IMO.

But like "DAJUICE" stated. RAW/BARF would be ideal.

  8. First of all the size of the bag has nothing to do with it. Uh get 2 bags if you don't want to make a trip so often. Besides, you are going to be giving the dog less if you give a quality feed. Are you reading any of the posts? Somebody has already pointed that out.

As for the 2nd bold part, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Good foods cost money. You get what you pay for. The dogs actually USE the food instead of crapping 3/4 of what you feed them out on the ground. Therefore you can FEED LESS. I have 43 lb dog on innova evo that gets 1 1/2 cups a day. He maintains his weight perfectly and not only that, if he doesn't get some work in will actually gain.

Take some time and do some research on kibble if you are going to stick with kibble. There's a variety of good ones. If you don't understand keep asking questions.

BTW there is a ton of old threads on what people feed. Why not use the search function and look some of them up. It's all been said many many times over before. ;) After reading these old threads you should come away with a little understanding of quality kibble vs crappy kibble and it's health and cost benefits.

Purina EN is a food I use both for my kennel and dogs with weak guts. I used to feed Dog Chow but I get a discount that I couldn't refuse for EN.:)

Megger, the quality of food you're feeding will also adjust how much you need to feed. A higher quality food (better proteins, less grains/fillers) will mean you actually need to feed less. When we fed kibble (we've switched to raw), we fed Blue Buffalo Wilderness (six star food on that site listed) and it came in a 26# bag - 3 dogs at the time and it would last about 3 weeks.

Oh, See. I didn't know that when you fed better food they ate less. is this from the protein and stuff? I do know corn meal and fillers arent good and that when you feed them a brand like say,"SD" they arent getting what they need so they need more of that food?

How much should I feed them?

Riley gets 2 cups in the morning and 2 at night.
We tried feeding her at first 1 cup in the morning and one at night but she lost weight and looked horrid so I feed 2 cups twice a day

Peaches gets 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup at night with a bone treat in the afternoon. her weight seems perfectly fine.

So when i start feeding her candidae should I feed Riley twice a day 1 cup?

and feed Peaches the same aswell?

and wouldn't it make sense to buy a 44lb bag? if they eat less that means less money being spent over a course of three or four weeks?

yeah, it maybe expensive but How I see it the extra money being spent will be put to very good use.

  14. We feed our big dogs Core Wellness. Its all meat no veggies so they dont eat as much of it because its less waste. The biggest bag you can get in that is a 26 lb. bag and one of those lasts almost three weeks and there is always food out because they're so active. Its for 3 + the 2 chihuahuas having the occasional munch. I've tried alot of dog food brands and I like this one the most.

We feed Canidae; quality feed at an affordable price. In summer months we feed 2 cups a day for 40-50lb dogs. Right now we're feeding about 3&1/2 cups a day to maintain winter weight.

Megger, it depends on what food you're feeding. I would figure out a food that you'd prefer and go from there. Taste of the Wild or Blue are the two I'd personally recommend price-wise. Canidae's good, but I don't care for anything but their grain-free. Really, it depends on what you want to pay and so forth. :)

I seriously would feed innova for kibble, which is what I have been using on my girl since she was a pup, I recently started to add raw to her diet and she is doing brilliant. What I have been feeding is 1 cup of soaked innova kibble and then I will give her a chicken leg and wing both raw. Some days I will add a raw egg to the soaked kibbles along with the egg shell. You should consider at least partial raw.

If you are looking for more bang for your buck you need to consider how much you will feed for each dog of each food in order to determine which is the best deal per lb. Foods like SD will require you to feed more because of the filler, ie by-products and corn which make up the majority of the food.

If you don't want to go into the 50$ a bag range then you should try Nutro Max. It's not a high performance food but will cost about the same as Purina. You can find it at any pet specialty store, usually. They also do a buy 10 get 1 free program which can save you a lot of money in the long run.
