SALEM, Ore. -- Salem police stepped in to stop a neighborhood dog fight Sunday, but a dog hit by a Taser later died at a veterinary clinic, officers said.

Randall McKinley said a fight between his pit bull and a pit bull owned by neighbor Crystal Davidson caused blood to splatter on the outside of his home on Abrams Avenue in northeast Salem.

McKinley said an officer who arrived to stop the pit bull fight had to take action quickly because Davidson's dog Hershey had its jaws locked on his dog.

"Either tase it or shoot it," McKinley said. "It wasn't the police officer's fault, I don't think."

Salem police said the officer used his Taser on Hershey five times. After the electric shock wore off, it continued to attack, authorities said. The dog collapsed after the fifth Taser shock.

Officers said they rushed Davidson's dog to an emergency clinic for animals, but veterinarians were unable to save the pit bull.

Davidson said she's heartbroken by the dog's death. She said her dog was a victim, too.

"How could something so pointless and senseless happen where Hershey had to die?" Davidson said.

No criminal charges or citations have been issued in the incident. The two neighbors said a lot of pain and grief remain after the pit bull fight.

"I don't blame the breed of dog by any means. My kids were raised around pit bulls and they're wonderful dogs," McKinley said.

"That dog was the best dog ever," Davidson said. "He was amazing."

sorry to here about the dog but i hope the guy stays away from pitbulls from now on. You should never have to shock, shoot, kick, stomp, etc... to break up a dog fight. And if you don't want to learn how to properly break one up, buy a cat.

You know how easy that woulda been to stop... he has a fucking baton he can use as a break stick, and a second guy to leash one, and wheelbarrow the other.

What the fuck was he thinking honestly?

It could have all been avoided! I don't blame the cops, it aint there job to be experts on how to break up a dog fighting. Owner with the pitbull is responsible for her dogs death.

There isn't a dog fight in the world that can't be broken up with some common sense! Delivering a tazer to the dog? The cop should have told those dumb ass owners to get in there and choke their dogs off one another or leash them up.
