American Bully the New Pit Bull?

Menace or Mis-understood? That's the question a dog show in Dalton is raising about pit bulls.

Groups of people showed off their dogs at the Northwest Georgia Trade Center this afternoon.

The room was full with a new breed of pit bull called the American Bully.

"They are great around the kids, they are protective when they need to be, people give them such a bad rap," says dog owner, Aimee Jones.

The rap these dogs have, some would say is earned honestly.

According to a Center of Disease Control report on DOG BITE LAW - the most trusted and extensive resource for dog bite victims, parents of victims, and dog owners needing legal information. out of 1,000 dog bites in 2007, 33 of them were deadly.

In addition, 74% of those those deaths are from Rotweilers, Presa Canarios and pitbulls.

But the people participating in the American Bully Kennel Club says their new breed is all bark and no bite.

"Anything that has a touch of terrer in it and looks like a pit bull has become a nuisance and a problem in society and that's not what they are," says dog owner, Kris Santamarina.

"Those dogs are bread wrong, we've crossed pit bulls with a few other dogs and we have now what's called an American Bully," says Jaiy Bradie, event organizer.

Organizers of the American Bully Kennel Club hope shows, that highlights the bully's beauty will change their image.

During the show, kennels from all over the nation parade their dogs in front of crowds and demonstrate their gentle nature.

"We are trying to save the breed and part of saving the breed is changing the image and perspective of the breed. Peolpe have to see see that its not the dogs its the owners, the way they are trained and the way they are trained that makes them what they are," says James Cooper, Registrar of the American Kennel Club.

"You dont raise em to be mean a ferocious and attack people, they need love kisses and hugs," says dog owner, Paula Lowrance.

Guy Bilyeu with Chattanooga's Humane Society says smaller dogs like chihuahua's are actually responsible for most dog bites and the reason pit bull like dog bites result in death is because they are much bigger.

I wish all Ambully owners would just stop calling them APBT's. I'm sick of people asking me why my "pitbull" is so small.

Let them think those over sized blue dogs are real APBTs. Maybe the public will leave our skinny greyhounds mutts alone. ;)

If I understund correct in there was actually a meaning that Bullys and APBTs would be counted as different breeds. I think it is writters fault when he/she said that am bully isa new breed of pitbull. Putting pitbull the main category like coonhoudns or terriers or so on.

I think it is better that people call bullys American Bully an pitbull American Pitbull Terrier. Makes more sense to me. :D

Im in the military and I asked 3 of our brand new kids what they think of when they think of a pitbull. Of course they say huge head and chest. So I had to break it down to them and explain the difference between the 2.

That term "breeds of Pit Bull" drives me nuts!

There ARE no "breeds of Pit Bull". There is A BREED called the Pit Bull (and Pit Bull is JUST a nickname for the American Pit Bull Terrier ONLY!)

I know what "breeds of Pit Bull" is supposed to mean -- breeds that LOOK like the popular vision of Pit Bulls and therefore ARE Pit Bulls by the warped vision of the media.

Why can't they just say THAT?

Because the term "breeds of Pit Bull" is so commonly accepted, we now have the blue nose breed, the red nose breed, the Gator mouth breed, the brindle breed, the bully breed (of Pit Bull), in ADDITION to any other dog that "looks" like a Pit Bull...

Heh, a guy yesterday bumped into Begonia and me while we were out for a walk. He told me, and I quote: "Nice looking dog! What is she, a whippet, Jack Russel mix?" I had to laugh...

"Organizers of the American Bully Kennel Club hope shows, that highlights the bully's beauty will change their image."

The "bully's beauty" ... How am I supposed to admire a dog's beauty when he's being handled by a blond with huge ta-tas, standing in front of an Benz with chromed-out rims?

    All glitz, no performance.

That dog looks like an English Bulldogge I used to have. She couldn't handle a 5 mile walk down to the beach for playtime, and I don't think this one could, either. Bully breeders are, essentially, turning Pits into cripples.

I took my pup to petsmart last night and the cashier asked me,

"What kind of pit bull is that?"
    "Excuse me?"
"There are different kind of pit bulls, what kind is he?"
    "He's just a regular one."
"No...they've got red noses, blue noses, American Staffordshires..."
At that point I just didn't answer her lol

Another guy told me my pup was too skinny...Wonder what kind of "pit bulls" he is used to seeing. Hmph.

Unfortunately, they're never going to leave ours alone.a couple things I just can seem to understand,1. is why do they insist on calling them pitbulls,I've had all kinds of mutts before and liked them, but never tried to lie about and call something they're not. 2. Why did anyone ever like them in the first place.I hear some people say all show and no go,I don't even see the "show' part. They're pretty ugly. I've heard all the skinny comments and red nose, blue nose, etc. nonsense.Best thing to do is figure your talking with a retard and leave, you can talk to them until your blue in the face and at the end they're still a retard.

I think that a lot of it comes from people misunderstanding "Type" and "Breed." and, underneath of that, Line-Type, if you look at it from that slant... Like, Sorell's dogs and Garner's dogsare Pit Bulls, and they look like Pit Bulls, good looking Pit Bulls, too. But you can tell which came from which, just because of subtle things, in some cases. But they're not a different "type" of pit, they just have a few minor specific attributes inherent in their lines. A lot of people just don't "get" that. They think a "blue" is a "blue pit bull", different from a "red-nose" pit ... yadda yadda yadda... They see an "Elite Edge" dog, and think "Wow! Great looking 'blue pit bull'" and somebody else might say "What? Why on Earth would you breed a pit, bulldog and mastiff together to create a blue cripple?" And so it goes...

"Best thing to do is figure your talking with a retard and leave, you can talk to them until your blue in the face and at the end they're still a retard. <!-- / message --> "

Yeah. All you have to do is look at these guys... shiny cars, shiny rims, bling bling jewelry and a dog that looks chunky and burly... it's all their ego. ALL ego. And they don't want to be told any different. Won't be told any different. There's a guy on my block like that. We just avoid him, and avoid talking to him.

That article is completely retarded and as a Bully owner I am ashamed to be grouped in with people like the guy they interviewed. They tell people that Bullies are all laid back and are completely cold with other animals, ultimately setting these dogs up for failure right from the get go. There are tons of Bullies that are far from being cold with other dogs. Most of these jacka##es don't know a thing about dogs, nevermind Bullies or APBTs yet they act as authorities on the breed. That makes me sick to my stomach.

What a reliable article! "those dogs are bread wrong"
I can understand typos in the forums, etc...but in an article? That's a pretty big mistake

Exactly. I made this same comment on another board. The APBT is going down the exact same road it's working bulldog forefather did 100 years before.

I have to agree with you on that one! LOL. My bully isn't cold with other dogs at all. But he sure is a FAT KID!!! Hahahaha

I don't think you should be ashamed of anything. When you say "There are tons of Bullies that are far from being cold with other dogs." that tells me that you did your homework, regarding your bully, and you manage him/her effectively in accordance with his/her drives and personality. You don't lie to yourself, you know your doggie's limitations, you don't lie to others and as such, you're a responsibly bully/dog caretaker. And there's nothing to be ashamed of about that. :o

  19. FYI

    Pit Bull

    is not a breed ....

your response should have been its an American Pitbull Terrier...
