Yeah, proper chain set-ups would have made it less likely for something like that to happen.

It makes me mad that they (the media, the neighbor) are labeling those dogs dangerous, just because they hurt another dog, doesn't mean the town is in danger.

That's a good video for those who think there dogs have been well socialized and are not DA! Sooner or later there heritage will come out to one extent or another no matter how diluted the dogs may be.

EXACTLY!!! If those had been on proper chain set ups or even in kennels that wouldn't have happened. How can ANYONE that owns this breed allow them to run in a backyard unsupervised and unrestrained??? STUPID!!!!

My male Sampson is good with other dogs and never showed any kind of aggression but he is (for now) outside on a cable tie out and not allowed to run a loose even in a fenced backyard. Because if he were to get out who knows what could happen if I'm not here. Sampson is usually in the house but I just had my Doberman puppy's ears cropped and my mom has a strict "not over 2 dogs" policy lol

Seems something slightly wrong here. I realize that the dogs will fight if left unsupervised, but this wasn't a fight, this was a pack turning on one of thier own. All those dogs attacked the other dog, it wasn't just a fight.

So the pack, might have seen 2 of the dogs fight and chose to defend one?

I guess I am asking if this was a case of PB's deciding to have a fight, or something else.

I have seen multipul dogs attack another dog, but they were the same pack attacking an outsider, not dogs that live togeather ganging up on one.

IMHO that person was not acting responcible by allowing PB's to run freely togeather in his yard, that is outside the question I am asking.

7. Exactly that situation can happen with any kind of dogs that have the power to kill another dog....for example greenland-dogs. In fakt in such a situation greenland dogs would not only kill the dog , they would eat him ....
This can also happen to rottweiler or GSDs or many other kind of dogs....the truth is even in nature wolves sometimes gang up on one wolve for what reason ever and kill him....well that is a cruel thought for a human but mother nature gives a shit about ouer feelings and thoughts....
Well....what was the problem here....i think the only problem here are stupid owners. You can hold every kind of dog in a pack....even Pitbulls...they are not more vicious than other dogs. But from time to time some dogs will be hurt or in some cases a dog can get killed....because if you hold your dogs like wolves you give the judge power to mother nature....
A good an propper chain-System is the savest form to hold strong dogs....no matter what kind of strong dogs....

How come each day people hurt children people kill and we only here about 2 percent of the events ? I feel any pack of dogs could do that. But PB owners have to be more careful then most since the world is watching.

Pit bulls always make the news :(

I had a friend over last night and she told me that her boyfriends sister (I think that's who it was) is in the hospital because 3 nights ago the bottom half of her face was ripped off by a golden retriever, they half to do reconstructive surgery and a skin graft...I never saw or heard about it in the news. And she said that "it's crazy because those are the nicest dogs ever"

This should be an eye opener for people that like to keep their APBT's lose in a pack unsupervised. I see many rescue people try to keep APBT's in packs and it seems most learn the hard way that is not a great idea. They can be fine for many years then all of a sudden a fight will happen. Especially when the dogs mature to about 2-3. I think it's possible to have them get a long under strict supervision but never leave them alone. On the flip side I think many APBT's have no business being keep like that, they should be on a good chain system or in dog runs. It's really unfortunate that stupid owners like this give our dogs bad raps.

Golden retrievers are one of the top biters along with labs and Cocker spaniels. Most people are shocked when told this info especially when told after they shrug when I mention I own APBT. Of course they only know what they hear on the news. Thanks a lot media.

Consensus on this group is the “old pole and chain”, but is that really better then having fenced runs? Dragging a chain around all day can't be "the best" way to keep a dog, seriously...<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

It might be the best way to keep many dogs if you don't have the $$ for fencing, but I fail to see how it’s "the best". It’s probably "the worst" of the acceptable methods to keep dogs in my humble opinion.

There are many types of dog owners, most are pet owners, some are what I call animal keepers (they think they are pet owners), and some are breeders. Surely there are more types of dog owners but these are the major groups commonly seen.

People who leave dogs outside on chains every day of the year with a small house filled with straw are what I consider animal keepers. Sometimes they even have a few or many dogs and probably only really see them when feeding or once in a while on the weekends, probably for 15 min. I often question why these people even own the dog. One lives behind me…

Breeders I would expect keep the dogs in a cost effective way, but probably in a place with heat, fenced runs or their house. I guess it would depend on the scale. Bob Taska who is a GSD breeder locally keeps his dogs in a kennel the size of my house, fenced runs, and office and a large training area. He has millions, and keeps a lot of dogs on his grounds so that is kind of an extreme example but as it scales down, so would the setup.

Pet owners would probably have 2-3 dogs max, walk them often, keep them indoors, allow them to play in the fenced yard while supervised and might have a run or chain setup to allow the dog time outside during nice weather, for a few hours at a time, etc…

Of course I could be wrong, looking forward to learning why a dog is happy chained to a pole every day.

13. I think there is nothing wrong with the axle-chain thing if the dog has every day contact to the owner/breeder and a propper dog-house. A good chain is the best to keep a dog save in his yard....and if the dog has a good high quality colar a chain doesnt hurt the dog....

Some of these dogs are crazy and like to chew on fences either chewing their way through or breaking their teeth trying.

I agree, most of the time you need to raise APBT's to be in dog runs or they will just go right through the chain link. Chain link does not stand up well against an APBT that has it's mind set on the other side.

There is a right and a wrong way to chain dogs. It doesn't mean your a bad owner if you chain dogs the right way. It means you're responsible enough to know how to keep your dogs out of trouble.

I would have to say that for the game bred apbt there is only one way to keep them in the yard (chain), but i do have one that is in the house all the time and sometimes he tries to go through the door just to get put on the chain. I have seen what happens when you keep 2 in the house when they mature and it is not pretty. like you guys know, if a apbt wants to go through a fence then the fence is not going to stop it, but the chain does.
Can any one prove that apbt's dont like being on the chain? can you prove that they love being in the house? fact is that they are outside animals, and if you choose to share your house with them then good for you.
animal keepers, pet owners, or whatever; they are animals they are our property and we are their masters. i have more then 10 dogs but i have 2 elec. mills and 2 slat mills and a ground springpole at every chain setup my dogs get there fill with each. can you say they are not happy healthy or exercised? you could but is it true? don't think so..
I would rather have a neighbor with a yard full of properly restrained dogs that knows what there doing, then a petbull owner with 2 dogs that doesn't have a clue.
Cause where i live the petbulls won't make it...;)
just my thoughts.
apologies for the blah blah blah LOL:D

I'm sure that some dogs like being put on the chain versus having to sit in the house during reasonably good weather.

What do you do with 10 dogs? Do you consider these dogs pets?

If you own a dog that is breaking its teeth on a chain link fence to get away, something else is wrong there. Properly exersized and mentally challanged dogs wouldn't be spending time chewing on metal as a normal behavior and to the .5% that would, let them go toothless as Darwin would predict.

In any event, I believe most folks on this forum keep very happy animals, not looking to start a flame thread so thanks for the info.

A fence wouldn't contain my dogs. They would find a way to dig out, climb over, anything to get out of it. My dogs don't seem to mind the chain at all.

I have a 15 year old Lab/husky mix named Cuddles. She lived the majority of her life in a pen, and for the last three years, she's been on a chain set-up. Now mind you, I can't ask her which one she prefers, but going by her behavior, she seems to like the chain set-up, more than she liked the pen. Inside isn't an option with her either. She absolutely hates being inside. She'll whine at the door, or pace back and forth. She just has never liked it. I've tried a few times.

If you own a dog that is breaking its teeth on a chain link fence to get away, something else is wrong there.

I took care of my friend's lab mix this summer. She brought his kennel over for him. Like my dogs, I walked him everyday, and made sure he had plenty of exercise. He still chewed on his kennel, and eventually made a hole. He got loose, luckily, I caught him before he tried to "play" with my dogs, and I had to patch the kennel. So, I don't think it's all that uncommon. I don't know 100% though.
Cuddles' pen was wood, and she used to chew on that to get out. I can't say for sure, but if it was chain link, I think she would have tried that as well.
None of them broke their teeth though, luckily.

Chaining has become looked upon as a bad thing, because of irresponsible people. I feel tethering rep and our dogs' rep closely mirror each other. Many people want to get rid of our breed, instead of punishing the Irresponsible owners, because they blame the breed, much like, many people want to ban chaining, instead of punishing the Irresponsible Chainers, because they keep blaming the chain. An APBT can be a great dog and pet in the right hands, and a chain can be a fine way to contain a dog if done correctly. :) Hope this helps.

irresponsibility and poor judgment is cont. to ruin it for us responsible owners of the breed. we need to be proactive instead of reactive
